My girlfriend went to that dentist before and she came out of there worse off. They were taking out a wisdom tooth but they cracked it and couldn't get all of it out. I wouldn't advise going near the place.

Ouch that sounds nasty..I havent been there myself in years but they started my fear with Dentist.. I would not trust them to extract a wisdom or any tooth..

I did howver get one (i should have got them all out) of my wisdom teeth out in the Bons in Cork and I have to say they were fab. I only had to pay €75.00 for it also with VHI plan B coverage...

It might be worth ringing around, I found a dentist in Little Island who took out all my wisdom teeth for me when other dentists said it would have to be done in hospital.
She done it within a week and I didn't need any time off work either.

hmm - interesting. my dentist took one out about 3 weeks ago - top left. But he said that the lower left one would need to be done surgically. I am not sure why. I didn't have to pay for that as I have a medical card. But I think I can only get one out with a medical card.

But this lower left tooth - I do not see why they would not be able to take it out? Ok, I am not a dentist but it is well up about the gum. Maybe there is not enough of space to get in at it or something? I am not a dentist - i know but..

So what did you do - go to a different dentist for a second opinion?

    Ask the dentist why?

Sounds like an impacted wisdom tooth. Please take that with a large pinch of salt as I am not qualified in any way - just guessing.

I have an impacted wisdom tooth myself that my own dentist said would need treated elsewhere.

I find the dentists here very expensive!

Are you able to find someone in the UK? Obviously, you'll have to go private, but it'll be a whole lot cheaper! My husband was quoted 2k plus for two crowns in Cork. He got them done in London (along with an abcess he didn't know about) for £1100 including flights.

@ chuck - i am not sure if it is impacted - the tooth is well up about the gum line, but i don't know - maybe there is part of it under another one or something.. i will ask them actually..

@ abc - i don't think one extraction justifies looking into the uk - but thanks. :)

I got several opinions and the one in little island had no bother doing it.
She did one side of my mouth on a Friday and the other side the following Friday.
I can't remember exactly how much it cost but I'm pretty sure it was less than a grand.

Would there be a waiting list for the University Dental school if your using a medical card?

Anyone been to New Smiles Dental Clinic in Sligo? I have to get ALL my wisdom teeth out and their prices seem really competitive about €200 cheaper than the North but are they any good?

I got my wisdom tooth out in the dental hospital today. Thats where you get sent when you have a medical card. Unfortunately i didnt have the 300 euro to go private. It was torture. My gum shouldve been cut but instead the dentist spend 20 mins pulling & twisting, she was exhausted herself afterwards because it took so much effort. I am in absolute agony since. My whole left side of my face is bruised & corner of my mouth is cut from the pressure of the impliments leaning on it as she was trying to get it out. My own dentist sent me because he said it wouldnt come out without being cut. Went private a few yrs ago to get molar removed with twisted root, oral surgeoun cut my gum & slid tooth out. Didnt even feel it. Never ever again going to the hospital. Would rather save for 6 months & go private ...

I got my wisdom tooth taken out there and wish I never did. They severed some nerves on my tongue, which meant that I couldn't speak properly for a number of weeks and they never gave me any antibotics, so I developed multiple infections and they misdiagnosed that. I went to my own dentist, who was absolutely livid about the treatment that I got, that she won't refer any of her patients there anymore.

I had mine taken extracted by William Murphy on Camden Quay a few years back. It was just under €300 but luckily I was on work VHI at the time.

The procedure was painless however I missed a few days of work due to swelling of the face.

The scariest thing is having to sign a waiver stating that you understand that there may be complications, such as possible numbness and loss of sensitivity in the lower lip/jaw.

I've searched online and this seems to be fairly common, just to let you know the risks.
No. Most, if not all, doctors make their patients sign a "waiver" that explains the procedure and some of the risks and complications that might occur as a result of the operation. But these waivers do not excuse a doctor's malpractice. Regardless of whether you signed a waiver, your physician is still under an obligation to exercise the same degree of care in operating on you that any reasonable physician would. If his performance during the surgery dips below the standard requried of him, he may still be liable for medical malpractice

Same here. I highly recommend the guy, 2 visits, in and out in 15 minutes each, and a good recovery.

Ive just discovered that the dentist left some of my wisdom tooth behind yesterday!!! Any advice plz?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,411 ✭✭✭ABajaninCork

When mine were removed, some of the root was left behind. It was such a long time ago, but I think it was one of the upper teeth. It's never caused me any further problems.

It's probably nothing to worry about, but maybe check with the dentist?

The root is prob ok but this is a piece of tooth ...

    +3 for Dr Murphy.

I had to get two out and he had them out in a few minutes (two visits three weeks apart.) Completely painless altho some freaky sounds. Just close the eyes and go to your happy place. :)

Had I known how simple the whole thing was I would have saved myself a whole lot of pain in the preceeding months, putting off getting them done because of the 'dentist fear'

I had 3 taken out at the Dental Hospital and it went fine for me. The head guy overseeing the work of the the other dentists wasn't very pleasant but the experience itself was over pretty quickly and painlessly. There was no aftercare as such though so I only made it to the car before the blood started pumping :(

In contrast I had the 4th wisdom tooth hacked out by an NHS dentist in the England years ago and torture doesn't even begin to describe it.
