Do I have to sign a Non Compete Contract

My boss is selling his practise (due to bankruptcy) and I have been asked to sign a non compete contract so if anyone buys it I can't take clients with me. In all my years working there I never had to sign one, can they make me now?

I would suggest that under most circumstances a long-term employer would not be able to compel you to sign one *but* I'd also suggest that you probably need to be looking at getting formal legal advice for this. You'll never be able to tell us enough about your exact employment circumstances to get a reliable answer for your situation.

Personally, I think you're putting yourself into a bad position if you sign a non-compete contract like this.

Yes, it's turning incredibly messy and nasty. Don't want to sign one and don't think I can be made to but it's Courts Service selling the practise and/or clients not our boss and they are intimidating.

Get legal advice to its enforceability. Very few are enforceable (mine wasn't). If its not, sign it.

Are you being kept on after it is sold or are you being let go?
