I don't have a quad, but I have a ride on Lawnmower with a Honda Engine that was behaving like that last year. I had a few 'new year problems'

It would turn over and wouldn't start so I dosed the carburretor mechanicsms with WD 40 and it loosened out.

I also had a problem with it turning over without starting after this. It turned out to be a faulty switch on the bag collecter at the back. It would start now and again, but I couldn't predict it.

I went through all the wiring and checked the connections and they were fine. It was just that the switch wasn't being closed properly.

Having to rock the machine might mean a loose connect or a damaged wire.

Off course it could be something completely different!

Thanks for your help both of you. So in the link thanks @101sean it was the brushes. Had to travel 30 miles to get them but I installed them today and the quad is back and working as good as ever! @Figerty I am glad I don't have a lawn so I don't need a lawnmower. They always seem to cause trouble. Thanks again guys really appreciate your help! I thought my quad would be a write-off! Funny that two things less than 5cm can loose all power to the quad. Thanks again :):):D
