According to reports in South Africa, former Springbok head coach Peter de Villiers is the leading candidate in a shortlist of 5 names to become the new Munster head coach from next season, with current head coach Tony McGahan heading home at the end of the current campaign to take up a role with Australia.

De Villiers told South African national newspaper Die Burger: "I have missed the game immensely since leaving my role with the Springboks. I am eager to challenge myself in a different environment and a coaching role in Europe would do just that."

Whilst De Villiers was unwilling to reveal any names of clubs who have approached him, it is believed Munster are interested in acquiring his services along with several clubs in France, rumour has it Munster CEO Garrett Fitzgerald has already opened dialogue with De Villiers' agent Schalk Botha with a view to beginning negotiations.

Great to see a top class guy coming in. Makes the Morne Steyn rumours seem more likely too.

I'd rather have Hook and Pope than De Villiers

They'd be less mad compared to him

Whether it was an April Fool's joke or not (and it wouldn't seem to be), Scrum V reported this evening that Seán Holley is one of the candidates for the Munster job and has been approached.

Was also reported in The Rugby Paper today.

That would be a strange one if true.

Sean Holley isn't funny enough to be a joke.

Sir Clive would be funny enough.
