    Hi ,

I have looked online and can't seem to find a relevent answer to my question so on to Boards says I .

After waiting for 2 1/2 years for an operation I was called by the hospital a few weeks back and they asked if I would go to Cork for my operation under the NTPF . I was told the operation would be done in Cork by someone who my own specialist would recommend so I say "sure" .
Now please don't get me wrong , I am grateful to have the operation done at all but at the time I was not aware of how many trips up and down to Cork I would have to make . Once to see the specialist before the Op , then down for the Op and now down again for a post Op check up . I was under the impression that all cost were covered when you were sent out of the country under the NTPF but I was told initially that there is no travel expenses to cover treatment within Ireland .

Does anyone else here have any experience of this or know where I could check this out ? I can't find any details of it on the NTPF website .

    Thanks

    John

jonski are you in receipt of a social welfare payment? If so, you can speak with your community welfare officer re: emergency needs payments for travel to your appointments.

Yes I am , I hate the thoughts of going to the CWO "begging" , If that is the only way I will go without . Thanks for your advice though .

Its not begging. You are meeting unexpected, essential exceptional expenses that you would not be reasonably expected to meet out of your income, which is just social welfare. If these travel expenses are putting undue hardship on you, then you should definitely go to the CWO.

I think that is the only recourse available to you under the social welfare system.
If you have a particular question regarding the NTPF, your question may be more suited to another forum, maybe Health Sciences? If you wish I can move your thread there.

FYI the information on the payment can be found here:
    http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/SupplementaryWelfareAllowance/Pages/ExceptionalNeedsPayments.aspx
    This link specifically states:
For example, the payments can be for special clothing for a person who has a serious illness, bedding or cooking utensils for someone setting up a home for the first time, visiting relatives in hospital or prison, or funeral costs.
