I see Reading are close now to returning to the EPL. That means Ian Harte and Noel Hunt will be in the premier league aswell. Could Ian Harte even push for a place in the Irish squad? *flashback of the penalty miss v Spain*

    Interesting.

Not a hope with Philly Hughes in his current form.

TBH I don't think he will play for Ireland again.

    No.

A 34 yr old left back who's slower than a Lada full of elephants going uphill is not what ROI need right now.

Imagine him going up against David Silva

I highly doubt Trapattoni will consider Harte at this stage in his career. He'll be 35 come the end of the summer.

At this stage of his career and Trap not one to experiment too much, a definite no. However, it's a very interesting shout though, his delivery from open play and corners is superb............it's something we don't have.

i mentioned in the ROI discussion thread i'd defo take him. Trap wont even consider him, which is wrong (not considering any irish eligible player), but i'd take him. He's played not 1, but 2 really good seasons in a row, in the championship team of the year last year (open to correction) and his delivery is still the best in the business.

That being said he's slow as fcuk and can't really defend. But when our campaign is likely to hinge on a few set pieces in tight games i'd have him in somewhere. It's not like our current full backs are blessed with immense pace either.

He's too slow, and always was. But for a defender to have nearly scored 100 goals in official matches for club and country is some achievement.

sometimes i wonder if people watch the same game that i do.

That's not a bad idea tbh.
Bring Delap and Harte and keep them on the bench. If we're chasing a goal bring them on for the last 10 minutes. Harte's set pieces and Delap's throws would give us something different. Let's face it our full backs aren't up to much anyway. Say what you want but at least it would be a good plan B.

Also why not give Gary Doherty a place :)
Imagine a triple sub with all three coming. I'd love to see the look on the Spanish players faces if Doherty scored a bullet of a header in the last minute to win the game :D

Harte has 18 assists for Reading in his last 90 odd games and i think 13 goals. Granted he takes every penno and free kick going but it's still showing he has the set piece delivery. It's the same game we watch, and Harte is snail-slow and can't defend, realistically the way this Iriish side plays we are looking at 3 tight games where a set-piece could nick 3 points. On that basis alone i'd rather have him on the bench to cover the full back positions that a genuine full back who offers little going forward. Hell, if Trap wont pick Coleman with what he offers, maybe Harte is more his style!

I'm not a mod of the soccer forum. My opinion doesn't really matter!

nobody here in their right mind would recommend taking Harte as a starter. But realistically the games will be tight. Trap wont use the full 22 (i'd be utterly amazed if he uses more than 17 players) and having Harte on the bench to come on in the 75th minute of a game wouldnt be a complete nonsense.

All I am saying is if Reading make the EPL and he does well can or should he be completely ignored for the WC qualifiers? Not Euro 2012 though.

Harte was our weakest player at the 2002 WC.

He is hardly going to be better, 10 years later.

as i said above, given Traps style of play, our defensive solidity, the Euros is an ideal spot to take him as a bench impact player with 10 mins to go. In terms of set pieces, free kicks, corners etc....... longer term he serves little purpose he'll be 37 when the WC comes around.

Trap will play the same starting 11 every game barring injuries and barely touch the subs bench, so having him there to cover full backs wouldnt be at the expense of someone vying for a 1st team place.

Even ten minutes with him up against any decent Spanish/Italian/Croatian pacy winger would be too long. And I'm saying this as a Leeds fan who watched him for years.

lol darkman2 threads - look forward to the next ridiculous question posed

On a serious note, fair play to Harte for his last few years. In the League One team of the year when playing for Carlisle at center back for a chunk of the season; in the Championship team of the year the following season with Reading. Doing well again this year as they close in on promotion. Carved out a great latter half to his career after dropping down from the top level.

It's not rediculous. Harte is now back in the EPL. Ward's position in the squad is under threat I tells yeh!:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,597 ✭✭✭✭Liam O

Back when we were playing Kilbane there he probably had a case. I think I even made a thread about it. Ward is better, not the optimum player obviously, but does the job.

What's the deal with Greg Cunningham btw? He doing well for Forest? Wilson is another player we should be looking at playing there.

Although I do rate Trap, one thing that has always concerned me is that on the few occasions we have found ourselves chasing a lead we dont really have a Plan B. If we score first we usually manage to hold it off for a win or draw. If the opposition scores first we often look a bit lost and short of ideas.

Against the minnows in qualification who sit back and dont attack Harte would be great, some delivery on him. i dont rate Ward at all, actually think Killer is a better option but thats neither here nor there.

greg Cunningham isnt the answer from what I have seen from him at city.

Maybe O shea to left back and someone else right back is the answer...

Well done to Harte btw, great achievement, has done well the past few years.
