My pc crashed and was told to put a fresh install of windows on it.
Im running on xp pro so got my reinstallation cd and installed it.
All went ok until the end when my display settings are messed up, screen resolution and colour depth settings too.
When i go to control panel and display settings the colour quality only option is 4bit.

I have tried to reinstall windows again hoping to correct this but wont change.

    can some please advise

Make sure to install all the drivers after installing windows, ie Chipset, Video, Sound, Network et al.

You need to install your graphics driver.

Did you try THIS driver? What is reported in device manager for video adaptors? Any yellow exclamation marks present?

yes Nick I but did try that Driver
i reinstalled windows xp pro and all other programs etc taking me several hours yesterday and all back to normal but this morning i decided to install windows sp3 and when i restarted my pc it was back to the 4bit display.
when i switch the pc off again it says no operating system found and have to put cd in to get it going and its goes on to the 4bit display then but again i cant use it.
really very annoying after spending ages putting all on my pc to be back to square one again

If you got "No Operating system Found" randomly I would run diagnostics on the hard disk. It could be that that was the reason it crashed in the first place, sounds like the hard disk is faulty

Xp probably wouldn't install on faulty hardware anyway, it can be a real pain to install sometimes

I was getting strange windows errors a while back. Reinstalled Windows and it made no difference. Turned out it was the hard drive. Replaced it, copying everything directly from the old one, and everything was fine.

Windows will install on a dodgy hard disk, seen it plenty of times. A drive doesn't neccesarily need to be completely dead, just one with many bad sectors

if i leave a xp cd in drive it will go into the windows but only 4bit but if none left in drive says no operating system found
I tried a different harddrive with same result..in device manager shows yellow at 1. pci simple communications controller and 2. video controller..

If the video card isn't being picked up in device manager either the hardware or the driver (more than likely driver) is the culprit. Look for a driver on www.nvidia.com. Do run a hard disk diagnostics though, think that is a more serious issue to verify.

Are you saying it goes into windows as in boots to windows and not windows install only when the cd is inserted?
