P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor Code on 2001 Almera

I have had this fault on my Almera for a while now and I think the time has come to try get it sorted. Every time I reset the engine check light, it throws this fault back up again after driving for a little bit, usually when accelerating up to 60/70 mph but sometimes when just driving steadily at 30.

I have seen it twice I think where I would start the car and pull off, and the speedo wouldn't move at all. Then after a few seconds it would suddenly jump into life and move upto 30 or whatever my speed was and work fine after that.

Does anybody have any ideas what I should look at first? I could replace the VSS but somehow I don't think that's the problem. I am inclined to think it's a loose connection somewhere, but how likely is that? And where do I look?

    Thanks in advance.

Check for a bad connection at the plug of the sensor. However usually when the speedo intermittently stops its usually the sensor itself.

Cheers Plug, had a quick look at the two wires going to the sensor (red/yellow and black/white) and they seem to be fine. Do you know where the ECU is? I'd like to check continuity between the sensor plug and the ECU just to rule out a dodgy connection.

Is it difficult to replace one of these sensors? Access to it seems to be a bit tricky, even though you get to it from above, there is a few hoses etc. in the way and you have to reach in quite low.

They can be a bit jammed in place even after you remove the bolts.

As plug said above, the sensor itself is the most likely culprit.

Hi, I know this is an aging thread but I was wondering if you got your problem sorted out?

I have a year 2000 Almera 1.8 and when I drive up to speed, say over 60mph the MIL light comes on with P0500. if I trundle round town it doesn't come on at all. I've looked on the internet and there is a plethora of various answers but none seem to point to the actual sensor!

did you get any joy with yours?

    Thanks
    Kev
