Gnome Network manager keeps disconnecting...

...every 15 mins or so, on my O2 mobile broadband connection.
This happens on a couple of gnome desktop distros.Never on KDE.

I googled the problem but cant find an answer. Surely I cant be the only one.
Has anyone else come up against this problem?

btw, it restarts again quite quickly as I have "connect automatically" ticked, but its still a pain in the arse.

You could try a direct PPP dialer. I find all the Network Managers in general to be worthless.

OP, what's in the logs? (kernel and messages)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,238 ✭✭✭humbert

I've used NetworkManager (though not on Gnome) with an O2 dongle and didn't have that problem. Just so you can rule out it being a general problem.

Do you have competing wireless connections set up for NetworkManager? nm-connection-editor.

    In particular check /var/log/messages

PS, I don't agree about NetworkManager, or network managers in general, being worthless. If you're on a laptop and moving around they make life a lot easier when they are correctly set up and working properly.

Thanks for the replies. I have syslog open waiting for the next disconnect. (there's no "messages" file)

As I mentioned, KDE network manager has never cut out like the gnome version

By the way, this shuts down whether or not I have competing connections. The only other one would be eth0 wired to VU+ duo box

Ok, I checked the log after the last disconnect. Im sure you will only be interested in the first part so I will delete most of it...

Modem hangup, eh... This would suggest it is the modem, but it doesnt happen in KDE,as I said. Is there a configfile somewhere I can amend, I wonder?

I wonder could it be a power management issue? Very much guessing though.

whats stopping you installing and using the knetworkmanager in gnome, instead of gnome network-manager, if it works for you.....

A quick search and it looks like nm bug. Try wicd or a different version of nm.
    What distro/version you're using?

I tried that a year or 2 ago but could then not access knetworkmanager.Ended up reinstalling whole distro. May try it again in an Ubuntu I hardly use.

Looking at the latest log, I may have missed a few lines at the start of the disconnect sequence...

Any chance you're using a USB hub? I used an unpowered one for a 3G connection and USB disconnects were common.

Hope it helps. I'll have a look later at what settings I used for O2 in pppd.

By the way, network managers are definitely handy, but I'm more of a stick-it-in-a-shell-script kind of guy. :D

No, Im not using a hub. I might just have to use KDE for the net and gnome for streaming from the satellite box, as that keeps crashing KDE network manager. Oh well...I will survive. Just thought I would try and see if someone else had got around this problem.

    Thanks anyway

additional...I used my nokia c5-03 on Ubuntu for hours today without mishap which suggests it is some weird combination of the Sierra dongle and gnome.

Strange. Ill go to sierra to see if I can find anything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 854 ✭✭✭human 19

Well, I got this solved, seemingly,...by replacing the Sierra dongle with a Huawei E353
