Chrome using a massive amount of memory

    Hi all,

A few days ago my laptop began being a bit funny. When I turned it on and signed into my Gmail, I got a message to say that there had been suspicious activity on my account and that I needed to change my password. Since then I have been unable to sign in to Chrome properly. I resolved that issue this evening (uninstalled and reinstalled it) but I'm now seeing that Chrome is using a crazy amount of memory

See the screenshot from Task Manager here - http://i.imgur.com/or5S3.jpg

It has since risen to 1,500,000 and continues to climb. This is the only tab I have open. When I run the internal Chrome task manager all the memory is being used under "Browser", and I've disabled all my add-ons / extensions to see if that made a difference. No such luck.

I'm running out of ideas and really like Chrome so don't want to change.

Anyone had a similar issue in the past, or have any idea what might be causing this?

    Cheers,
    MJS.

If installing beta / dev builds use the offical channels

If Google said there was suspicious activity maybe you have a virus. Download and run Malwarebytes. Might be a good idea to run OTL and post the logs over in the Virus removal thread, someone will read it for you there and advice you on the next step.

In Chrome, click on the wrench icon in the top right then Tools > Task Manager.
It'll show a window listing the Chrome processes and memory used by each, will help you narrow it down.

If you click the 'Stats for nerds' link at the bottom of the window, you'll get further info, including the process id which you can relate back to the Windows task manager list of processes.

Ignore all that, I've just read the OP again and see you've already done that :o

Thanks all, I've reinstalled the version in the first reply and messed around with it a bit and it all seems to be under control now. Will have to keep an eye on it now though, especially with newer versions that come out.
