What to do about grinding and clenching?

    G'day,

I grind and clench the bejaysus out of my teeth at night. I wakes my poor girlfriend and causes me pain in my jaws and teeth the next day sometimes. I also think it changes the shape of my teeth gradually, causing me to cut the insides of my teeth and my tongue.

I asked my dentist an he said the best solution was to address the cause of the stress if that was where it originated from. Easier said than done.

I know you can get gum shields - either from a dentist where and impression is taken and it's specifically designed for your mouth, or from a chemist where you put it in boiling water and then shape it yourself.

Can there also be a chemical reason for this grinding or is it related to dehydration?

I do it more when I've been drinking I think.

I am concerned that putting a gum shield (or whatever the things are called) into my mouth may cause my teeth to lose the perfect beauty and symmetry which they currently sport.

Given that my parents spent thousands on orthodontic treatment for me over the years, I'm not keen on undoing that by buying a €50 gumshield and sticking it in my mouth without professional or anonymous Boards people's advice.

Thanks in advance for all your excellent feedback.

    Love,

    Alan

Soft gum shields and DIY bite devices will only make matters you want a hard splint. These are not cheap as they take time and skill to make and adjust, this is why so many people get stupid soft boxers gum shields that actually make grinding worse. Pm me if you want details.

    Hi Alan

Do you know if you snore or stop breathing while you sleep? There is a growing body of evidence that sleep apnoea can be the cause of grinding.
Unfortunately it's going to cost a lot more than €50 to find out and treat, but long term it's your overall health (and girlfriends) that's at stake

Not sure about the breathing. I snore a bit but not a huge amount.
