I used to work in a pharmacy selling lepto so my recollection may not 100 % accurate.

Lepto is a disease that mainly affects a cows fertility. It can cause problems getting a cow in calf and staying in calf. Eg a cow repeatedlybreaking. I think its transmitted from direct contact with infected stock.

The vaccination program is 2 injections 4 weeks apart and one injection annually.

The reccomendation is to have the vaccination program complete about two weeks before first service / going to bull.
A lot of guys would give the Bvd vaccination at the same time if they had been vaccinating for it as well.

Oh and the thing I always remembered is that lepto is zoonotic which means it can be passed to humans.

Product info and data sheet is on this link http://www.msd-animal-health.co.uk/products_public/leptavoid/010_overview.aspx

Rats are not involved in this strain of leptospirosis, spread is mainly by urine or uterine discharges.

Lepto additionally causes abortion in early winter and septicaemia in calves. Weak calves can be born alive instead of aborted.

Vaccinate any potential breeding stock from the minimum age the vaccine permits. The objective is to prevent leptospiral colonisation of the kidneys and therefore prevent the carrier state arising.

think a good stragegy for breeding hiefers is to do them at the autumn housing dose and then again 2wks before turn out.

we've started vacinations for lepto again this year. :o

I wasn't around/involved when herd heath decisions where made so I'll refrain from comenting on why it was stopped.... LAZY:mad::mad::mad::mad:.
We're starting it again due to fertility concerns.

over the last 3-4 years we've scanned all cows 4+ weeks after taking the bull away to identify empty animals. rather frustratingly we've still had a cow turn up in spring and not produce a calf. Having chatted about it with vet he pointed the figure at lepto being suspect number 1.
we're also bvd tissue sampleing this year and so far no calves have been identified.

This might not be the culprit it might all be just natural causes but in the mean time vaccination is cheap.

Hello all. Going to vaccinate cows and bulling heifers for lepto. I've never done it before. Does it matter when I give them the vaccination? I will be starting to A.I from beginning of April. Should I do them now or wait until after A.I or does it matter?

The only information I have is to vaccinate 4 weeks before turnout but not sure if that means 4 weeks before breeding or letting out of shed!!

The main reason I'm asking is because I don't want it to affect cows cycling. I need to have cows calving in Jan for work reasons
