    Match 2: Resident Evil
    Well, well...

    Ico Vs Half Life....

What a match up, two great great games right there.

But, in truth, Half Life, while a marvelous still pales in comparison to the brilliance of Ico.

    Iconic moments?
Half Life has many, but few stay as long as those found in Ico, the mirrors/lenses puzzle, the balance between risking your own skin and risking that of Yorda.

Nearly every standout moment in Half Life has been bettered, if not in Half Life 2 or one of the episodes, then in one of the myriad of strong single player campaigns we have seen in first person shooters since.

The lightness of touch in Ico, allowing the environment, That Castle and it's umpteen strange clockwork and weight driven devices, the peculiar tech that seems to be rotting along with the castle, all there to be used but whose true purpose is seldom understood.
The Windmill? Is it a folly? Is it a pump of some kind? To us it is a path, a way forward, to get away from the pursuing darkness.

Half Life boils down to go here, press this switch and open the next door to the next scene, repeat til the end.
Half Life forces us to endure that awful alien world, no one ever succeeded in making an interesting Alien world where pink was a predominant colour, just ask Halo 2, and so it is here.

There can be no doubt, Half Life sired Half Life 2, a very different game and a much better one, fixing a lot of the flaws of the first one and creating a new way of storytelling in games.

Ico, on the other hand, was perfect from the outset, needing no repair or patch.
It's successor, Shadow of the Colossus, simply took the metaphysics and myth of the Ico world and told a new story, a different one. Ico was a story properly told, now onto the next.

I guess a write up is due on Super Mario World as I still haven't done one.

Looking back, this was the game that defined my childhood. Growing up as a nipper, I remember getting the Mario Allstar SNES Pack and this game for Christmas. Up until then I had only played the SNES in my cousins, where'd I'd spend hours on Mario Kart and F - Zero, and the Mario Allstars. But never had I experienced anything like this.

I can continue on this basis, nostalgia tainted and longingly wishing to recall simpler times, but I won't. For me, SMW is the greatest game of all time for a number of reasons: accessibility, tight controls, gorgeous bright visuals, amazing level design, that music, Yoshi and the sheer creativity of the game. Some of these aspects have been matched in later Mario games (and Mario 3) but I can't imagine another game ever nailing just how fun it is and how well it's stood the test of time.

The sheer number of different exits, the wonder of seeing Yoshi for the first time, the final showdown with Bowser as well as every single castle level, the cape (ok it's no tanooki suit but it was a great power-up still), are just some of the highlights.

The game is fair, you earn everything by nailing the timing of jumps. This is a game that screams one more go, that is hard to put down.

Resident Evil is a great game too but is it really the greatest game of all time? It was groundbreaking at the time, becoming the standard for the survival horror genre but it isn't even the best game of the series (RE2 imo) and has been remade into a better game. Can you imagine SMW being remade into a better game? I don't think so. It's perfect the way it is and I think that's why I think it's the greatest game of all time, it can't be made better.

Half-Life is what FPS games could have been if Halo didn't come alone, i.e, good.

Oops, voted Resident Evil by mistake. I think DKC games have a much better co-op than SMW though!

Pity DKC is nowhere near as good a game :P

    Match 2: Resident Evil
Looks like super mario world will win it out. Strange as I don't even reckon its the best Mario. In my view it comes third behind Mario 3 and the best ever(despite the luddite voting on here) Double Dash!

I think we should do best game of the 80s after this or even do best of 1990/91/92/93/etc. as I've never came across that before.

Btw really enjoyed some of the write ups with Ciderman being pick of the bunch. Thread was a good idea so thanks Sparks.
Are we doing a third place playoff?

Im was considering a Console/Computer deathmatch next but the lack of love for Boulder Dash has hurt me:mad:

3rd place play off is a good idea and i will include it next week

I beat it recently. It really doesn't. Way too many samey levels and none stick out unlike Super Mario World where I could tell you exactly what every level is and how it differs from all the rest. DKC2 has a few levels that break the mould but most look and feel the same and there's quite a few pants levels as well.

Not sure if that would work. I could see a lot of duplicate choices. Game of the random year would be good. Put each year in between 1980-1999 in a randomiser and away ya go.

There really is no need to go to all that trouble, we all know the PC Engine will win. :D

    Match 2: Resident Evil
What nonsense, the Snes, Megadrive and Playstation all had better game content than the PC Engine over their lifespans, especially when a vast amount of the best on the PC Engine made it to those consoles mentioned much improved, Bomberman, the crush pinball games, BC Kid, Adventure Island etc.
It is a surprisingly nice machine though, so much packed into a device so small, with the dinkiest carts ever!
