As the title says can anyone give me a rough estimate for a new gearbox for a 01 Focus saloon petrol. There is a loud humming noise coming from mine when I am in third gear or higher. Any help is appreciated.

You should be able to pick up a secondhand box for around the €200 mark.

It may just need oil, it may be a wheel bearing.
I'd check the cheaper options first.

Is it gear related or speed related?

When the noise is there try pressing the clutch and see does the noise change.

It gets a bit louder as speed increases but does not change. Speed is fine it is just a humming noise that seems to come from the back but mechanic checked rear bearings and they are ok but he got under the front of the car and from going up through the gears reckons its the gearbox. I bought the car for 500 euro before Christmas so spending close to 800 euro doesn't seem like too good an idea to me.

Driveshaft bearing? Them gearboxes don't really give bother at all.

Is the noise continuous? If it was the gear box it would change with different revs and gear selection.

If its a constant noise that gets louder with speed but doesn't change otherwise then its a bearing going most likely. Rear bearings going is fairly common on the Focus.

Gearbox noise is usually worse at lower speeds when coasting in low gears than when actually driving in high gears. I reckon you should get a 2nd opinion ;)

Are you sure...? If its an IB5 this might shed some light on the situation :)

I think I will get a second opinion, there is no noise in low gears only from 3rd up and at motorway speeds its continous. I have had the rear passenger side bearings replaced so it could be the drivers side if not the gearbox. I think I'll go for that second opinion.

Well my sister owned it for a few years then my brother had it but only drove it a handful of times then it was sitting up for @2.5 years, had it checked out and all it needed was a new battery, there was never any issues with it until now.

I'd be very very very surprised if it was the gearbox :)

considering what u bought the car for i would one either scrap it if its gonna cost u big money to fix or two turn the radio up louder as u wont hear any noises then lol:Dthats what people tend to do with bangermechanics cars

Just to update here, aujopimur was right, so after second opinion from Ford dealer, both rear bearings needed to be replaced and broken coil spring on rear passenger side. Problem now fixed. Thanks for the replies.
