hi all - hope someone can help - i bought an acer aspire in oct/nov last year and from the beginning i thought when i played a dvd on it the sound was very poor but as i wouldnt be doing this v often it wasnt a problem - now i have family who hav emigrated and we are relying on skype but when i video called them they couldnt hear me - i thought there was a mike built into my laptop? also it wasnt very good sound when listening to them - i managed to pop in a mike i had from my previous laptop which had no camera and i had at the time purchased a camera/mike to use skype a few years ago..... i am not very techno minded so i hope someone can tell me what i need to do - i have windows 7 (i did look up online but was bamboozled as to what to do!) ..... help ; )

Well, if the Acer has a webcam, it's most likely that does have a built-in microphone.

Is your video working, i.e. can your partner see a you?

In Skype, go to Tools > Options > Audio Settings and make sure the the built-in microphone is selected. If it is working it you should see green bars if it picks up any sound.

can you post the exact model of Acer you have please?
i.e. Aspire 7655 wlmi... Then we can look up and see what hardware should be on the machine, if it should have microphone etc..

It helps in so far as we now know that your laptop does indeed have a built-in microphone.

Do the skype test call, speak when prompted, then you should be able to hear a playback of yourself, if you don't hear what you've said, check your settings on skype (as per Torqay's first post) if that fails try this

It would do no harm to download and install your audio drivers from here:

    http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=2057

I've seen corrupted sound drivers cause this problem on skype...
