Hope you more experienced watch enthusiasts can help me out! I am currently sporting a regular run of the mill citizen and want to treat myself with something nice in a few months. I imagine I'll have around €800 saved over the next few months and would like to buy a new watch.

If one buys a watch in that price range is it a bad idea to wear it regularly or should it be kept for special occasions to reduce wear and tear?

Basically any tips or ideas as to what I should look out for in buying a watch would be most appreciated!

    Thanks

If your buying new you cannot go wrong with Steinhart. Some nice watches at your price point. Without knowing what style you like i cannot be more specific so have a look at their collections.

    I particularly like this one.

Seiko also have some nice automatics for less than €800.

With €800 your also into the realms of a good pre-owned watch like a Tag Heuer or Omega although more than likely these would be quartz (battery powered). If you would consider vintage (over 20 years) you might even pick up a nice pre-owned mechanical or auto.

Well, first decide do you want automatic or quartz - both have their advantages.

Then decide what style you want - simple and dressy/sports with chronograph function/diver style/dressy chronograph/GMT/'Pilot' etc. etc. etc.

As regards your budget, you would get more bang for your buck if buying second hand.

However, for a high quality automatic that would cost very much more money if it had a mainline swiss brand, I would urge you to check out www.stowa.de. They have more or less every option covered, and except for the Chronographs are within your budget. I can speak personally of the exceptional quality.
