Budget NYC accommodation in June?

Hi All We're going to be in NYC for 7 nights in June...I'd no idea hotels were so expensive! Its depressing checking the hotel search websites! Can anyone suggest a clean reasonably priced hotel or B&B room for 2 people that is in easy reach of midtown? (maybe subway ride away...) Thanks all!

What about a hostel? My brother stayed here http://www.chelseahostel.com/ VERY basic, but clean, air condistioned (you'll need it!) and in the West Village.
