Earlier today I was using my phone when it appeared it wouldnt connect to the internet. I tried switching it off and on but it wouldn't switch on again, goes no further than the first screen, the goes blank before the screen comes up again.

The phone won't connect to Kies either as I'm assuming it has to be switched on.

Anybody any suggestions in plain English?

How far into the boot sequence does it get exactly? Do you mean the very first galaxy s i9000 screen or does it make it as far as the S boot animation?

If the former then it would seem to indicate your phone's become corrupted somehow. If you're using the stock rom, the one that came with the phone, then this really shouldn't happen.

First try removing the battery for a few seconds, then reseating it and charging the phone for a while. Then try booting up again. (Probably won't work.)

If that doesn't work, you'll need to try to get into recovery mode by holding volume up + the home button (bottom center) + power. When the phone reaches the Galaxy S i9000 screen release the power button. (There is a nack to this. If you don't get it the first time. Pull the battery and try again.)

Now clear the cache by scrolling down using the volume keys and selecting using the power button (might be some other button on stock).

Then find dalvik cache and clear it (if available).

Reboot and see if that fixed it. If it doesn't try a factory reset from recovery (you will lose all your data).

    Thanks for your reply!

It doesn't get as far as the "S" animation.

I followed your instructions and the same thing is re-occurring sadly

Ok then you have two choices. You can bring it into the shop you bought it from and they might flash it for you, more likely they'll send it off for repair.

    OR

You can flash it yourself. Quick and easy but does void your warranty.

    Thanks for your advice.

Took it into the O2 shop and they said they might be able to get it working with an ODIN update but was extremely risky.

However, on a lighter note when I got the phone early in March 2011 I took out what I thought was a wasteful Insurance Policy. Obviously not now in retrospect as that'll either fix it or replace it.

Using Odin is not extremely risky. Just pick the right rom.

Don't panic, these phones are very resilient and incredibly hard to brick. Follow the instructions in Simi's post above and you'll be fine. If you've any problems there are lots of people here that can help out.
