10 speed derailleur on 9 speed system

I have 9 speed Ultegra 6500 but the rear derailleur has gone a bit dodgey. (Top spring not work well so derailleur not retracting fully. When on small chainring and smaller sprockets chain is very loose. )

A friend has a 10 speed Ultegra derailleur he will give me. Will the 10 speed derailleur work on the 9 speed?

    Should work fine.

It'll work perfect but the pivot on your mech probably just needs to be stripped and cleaned, not such a big job, though it can be tricky re-tensioning the spring if you haven't done it before.
Like most things, it's very easy to take apart but not so easy to put back together!

And watch a spring go twang across the shed never to be seen again :-S

It can happen alright, but it's a rather hefty spring and SHOULD be easily found unlike S.A. pawl springs, I think they are made from human hair or something!

You've not seen our shed then. The dog has gotten lost in it. It's not huge, just full of assorted crap

Thanks for the replies, very helpful. I'll try to service the old one and can get the 10 speed one if I need to to.

Isn't 9 speed chain thicker than 10 speed? Surely it wouldn't fit in a 10 speed derailleur.

Yes, Rab, the 10 speed chain is narrower but I would expect that a 9 speed would fit through, may have to use jockey wheels of old one. I'll be trying it tomorrow, will let you know.

Will fit fine. I replaced a Tiagra 9speed Derailleur with a Ultegra 6700 rear derailleur on my Training Bike and put on a 9 speed chain no problem. The need for a 10 speed chain comes when you have a 10 speed chainset. (In some cases) The 9 speed chain will rub against the inside of Large front ring i.e. 52/53 ,when you are cycling on the small front chainring and in the smallest sprocket on your rear cassette , and so a skinnier 10spd. chain is needed.

Thanks for all the good advice.

I took the old 9 speed one off, took out the spring (thanks for the warning about the spring leaping out - I was ready for it!), cleaned the area and reassembled but I think it is just well worn after 9 years and many miles - I reassembled and it was no different.

Reassembly was certainly trickier, but got there.

So I got a used 10 speed Ultegra in good condition, gratefully accepted from a friend. I needed to change to the old jockey wheels as chain wasn't sitting right on 10 speed ones. It's running smooth enough but will go for a spin and do final adjustments tomorrow. I will hopefully be ready for 3 Peaks Challenge and Sliabh Maan on Sunday.

Once again, great advice and help from Boardsies, thanks.:)
