    Link

Allows you to run multiple OSs in parallel on the same machine.

    Notes:
    1. It doesn't include the additional OS, you'll need to buy that yourself, but useful if you want to try out a free Linux install or the new Windows 8 beta.
    2. It says $59, but that's for the Mac and Windows version - if you click on the 'Buy' button you can get the Windows only one for $9.95.

Actually, not sure if it will support Windows 8. It's not listed.
You can always try out the free trial first.

    [edit]
Looks like it does support the Windows beta

VmWare Player is free. But it does not allow you to create the images. You need to give it to it.
For creating your own images (install your own operating systems) you need VmWare vSphere, and is not free. (VmServer is an end of line product, not supported any more, ok if you are installing an old OS, but not a new one like Windows 8)

nope, vmware player can create images.

vmware workstation can create vm guests and run multiple guests (I think its vm workstation 8 now). Vsphere is for ESX/ESXi server grade installations, workstation is a type 2 hypervisor (you need an OS to sit underneath it) while ESX/i are Tier 1 (anything v5.0 onwards is ESXi by the way).

Also, workstation 8 can happily run windows 8 and other 64 bit guest OSes. and accroding to THIS vmware player also supports windows 8 dev preview so it stands to reason that it can also run win8 final but you need to be aware of the requirements for installing 64bit guest OSes.

I've heard a lot of good things about parrallells. If I had a Mac I'd defintely be looking at it as an alternative to vmware. must see if there's a parallells version for windows that I can play about with.

What do you mean by "Vmware server"?

VMware Server, used to be callled GSX, its for Virtualisation without a thin hypervisor (on top of an O/S)

ESX runs on the 'bare metal'

Workstation is totally different to VMware Server

It says €59 on the link in the OP?

I *think* vmware player is limited to one guest OS running at a time.

Dont know if paralells workstation (windows or linux version) can run more than one (vmware workstation is limited only by your resources iirc)

thats the Mac "desktop v7" price.

9.95 is the windows "workstation v6" price, older version so cheaper I'd imagine. probably not as many features either.

No, VMware player can run more than 1 O/S at a time aswell.

The big difference between VMware Server and Workstation/Player is the console, its a bit sucky on VMware Server, no 3d Acceleration and its over IP.

Workstation and Player also support Unity and Multiple Desktops.

Player is limited to two VM's active at once as well as a lack of networking flexibility and remote management that other VMware products have. For most machines that's more then enough. ESXI, also free is a more then scalable solution for set up's that require most active hosts.

Parralles is a interesting product, but I'm not sure it suits anybody but a hardcore workstation user.
