Examiner this morning says that they're are 5 in the frame for McGahans job in Munster. Any ideas or guesses about who they may be? EOS must be one.

O Sullivan, Bradley, Wayne Smith, Axel Foley plus 1 more

Penney, Smith and Foley are three. I wouldn't be surprised if Mallet was on it either. Eddie O'Sullivan is not on the list AFAIK

I thought Wayne Smith said he didn't want to be a head coach.

And did I imagine it or did Bradley sign a new contract?

Isn't there the New Zealand guy who's coaching some U-20 team?? And maybe (hopefully) Nick Mallett.

"The province has settled on a shortlist of five candidates. O'Sullivan, current forwards coach Anthony Foley, New Zealander Wayne Smith and Michael Bradley, formerly Connacht coach but now in charge of Edinburgh, are among those who have been linked with the role."

    This whole topic is hearsay, but that's the only reason I mentioned steady eddie;

Neither O'Sullivan or Bradley are on the shortlist I don't think. I'm pretty sure Axel is the only Irishman on it.

Smith said he wasn't interested in the England job because it was more of a "Director of Performance" position. He said he'd prefer to have a coaching position. Head Coach of Munster would probably suit him a lot more.

And that U20 coach is Rod Penney and he is definitely on the shortlist.

Nope two Irishmen. O' Sullivan and Foley.

From what I've heard/read the list is:

    Axel Foley
    Wayne Smith
    Nick Mallet
    Pat Lam
    Rob Penney

Personally I'd like to see Smith get the job, as he is the only back's coach on the list. Holland is on contract for another year afaik and we'll need a high profile back's/attack coach to nurture the current (and future) crops of talent. I don't see the need to get in a forward's coach as head, as we already have Axel to do the job.

I think it might be too soon for Axel to step up, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he proved me wrong.

All the main papers carry this piece which happens to be done by the same non-syndicated journalist.

Well I don't know anything about Penney but I think Wayne Smith could be an excellent appointment.

As long as Axel stays on a forwards coach, I think he's made a massive impact. Think it's a bit soon for him to be head coach though I'd like to see it in the future.

Can I ask are these names just conjecture or do you guys know something?

(I'm trying and failing to word that in a way that doesn't sound bitchy, so to be clear I'm not challenging you, just looking for clarification.)

I posted a link from rte.ie which is conjecture so that's where my list came from, dunno about the others here; they seem more certain.

I'm going purely based on what I've been told by a friend of mine in the MRSC. Could be complete rubbish.

I've a friend who lives with a dude that knew a guy who worked with a fella from the branch. My friend said the shortlist is: Eddie, Alex, Nick, Wayne and Michael...

That, just to confirm, means that Eddie Robinson, Alex Ferguson, Nick Saban, Wayne Bennett and Michael Schumacher are in Munster RFC's shortlist for their next head coach.

Watch this space, more on this to follow...

I've heard that there has been communication with Andy Robinson.

A-Rob has just been confirmed as staying with Scotland.

If Wayne Smith gets a roll with England he will take it and he'll be out of the equation. Twitterland was saying that Smith said Munster would be the only club he'd come to the NH to be head coach, I kind of hope that happens.

Whoever it is is going to have to phase out POC DOC ROG and wally in the next two or three years. Ouch.

That's possibly another reason not to give Axel the job yet given his relationship with them.

It's a tough job for a tough coach. Everything I've read about Penney seems really positive, maybe he's the guy.

The only one that there isn't a replacement for is ROG, we have Ryan, Nagle, Foley and Holland there as it is for the 2nd row, POM is the heir in waiting for Wally and we've signed Dougall, who some are raving about as a natual 7. I'm just not sure about Keatley and Deasy and Hanrahan seems to be groomed for centre rather than outhalf.

Dougal could be a decent signing in the long term, he has also captained Rotherham titans a few times this season

The administrative nightmare that is Munster mustnt have been explained to him yet with two centres, two stadiums, the limerick/cork infighting etc. etc. :D

He said he didn't want the head job in england because he prefers to just coach and stay away from all the pr & admin stuff that has to be done as head coach.

Elsewhere i'm reading that Lancaster wants to keep the 6Ns team together and that saracens are bracing themselves for the rfu to coming looking for Farrell.

Names I've heard in the pot are 5 from:

Axel, Eddie, Les Kiss, Mallet, Pam, Smith, Kirwan, Penney, Williams.

Id say the 5 of those are:
Axel, Eddie, Kiss, Mallet, Penney and my preference would be a Kiss/Axel team.

Do you have a link for this or is this just some sort of joke that you heard in the chipper last night??

I don't get why Kiss would be some sort of joke, but Wayne Smith wouldnt?

And no, I don't have any link for this, like I don't have any link for all of the others because everyone of them is pure speculation.

Brian McLoughlin is contracted to Ulster next year. He'll be working with Longwell in the academy. He's also not nearly up to the standard of other candidates for the job.

So why not name every other coach that has free time as well?

Also, as I'm sure you know B McL has taken over a new roll with Ulster rugby so in fact he is not free to take on the roll of Head coach in Munster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

.. and the very reason he was moved to that Academy position was because that's as far as he'll ever take Ulster. Not going into all the politics on how the situation was handled, but in short - fair play, you did a job, but time for someone better.

If that is/was the case why would anyone even think he'd make one of the top 5 names for the Munster job?

Yep he is the only coach with a permanent job in any UK, Ireland or French team.

I'm not sure what he is going to be doing next year, either Ravens Coach or Director of the Academy

He is running the Ravens at the moment as well but all rumours I hear about Brian McLaughlin suggest he is taking over the Ravens or the Academy
