JSA: Am I newly unemployed or a student in limbo?

I feel I'm in some sort of student/unemployed limbo. I was doing a phd, finished up and submitted just as funding (and the salary stipend) ran out. I'm no longer a registered student, though oddly I'm still on my university's system, so there's a bit of confusion/delay getting my P45. I'm just waiting around for my viva or thesis defense (one day oral exam) in a few weeks time, but other than that I'm available to work and looking for a job at present.

So I'm attempting to sign on (savings running out fast) but I've been asked for an official letter of sorts about this examination (I have none), and at the same time something official from the college to say I'm finished there. Apart from the P45, which I'm waiting for, I'm not sure how to get these. Would the viva (oral exam) preclude me from being available to work for some reason? Am I technically a student until then or something?

Go to the Student Records and Examinations Office in your college and simply ask them for a statement (signed and stamped by them) saying you have concluded your Phd. Get a letter from your supervisor saying you've finished to show to the people in the Records office if they are unsure about giving you a statement because you are still registered.

Don't bother mentioning anything about an oral as it's practically irrelevant.
