White Collar Advice

    Hi lads, would appreciate some advice..
    On Monday I'll be starting a White Collar Boxing training schedule for 8 weeks.

    Training will be 3 times a week. I'll be able to make it twice a week.
    Depending on work I might not be able to make the one other night.

    I'm fairly fit (though i know boxing is incredibly tough on the CV system)
    I cycle quite a bit and play a good bit of soccer.

    I used to go to the gym quite a bit but due to work I havent been in about a year.
    I have a bench at home which i use (infrequently!)

    I wont have a problem getting hit in the face :pac:

    Any advice?

    and MBC... no hints!!

    Put on some tunes with a beat and shadow box at home in rhythm to the music.
    Gets your feet and hands moving and the music spurs you on to see out the 3/4 minutes per round. Don't punch too hard as with no resistance to the punch you can strain your elbows/shoulders.
    This will give you fitness while also working on your boxing skills.
    Make sure to keep your hands up when doing the shadow boxing and don't leave yourself flat footed or open to counters. Shadow box like there is an opponent ready to hit you back. Have water and a towel nearby as if you are up on your toes and have your hands up, after 4 rounds you will be really sweating. Mix it up doing quick blasts of non-stop quick punches which is nearly like sprint work for runners. When doing the quick blasts of punches move your legs in same fast rhythm to work endurance. It's not something you would do in a ring but it will give you stamina for late in rounds.
    If feeling too tired to punch take a break by doing defensive movement with your hands up.

    I wouldn't recommend using the bench you have much.

    Do as much sparring as you can, the most important think to remember for a guy of your experience is to never take your eyes off your opponent. Alot of guys will bend down in close taking they're eyes off the opponent or looking away or flinching when a shot is coming your way.

    Learn a basic tight guard, hands tight to the forehead, chin down. This will help you get a bit of rest if you can move with the guard if you feel very tired and it looks like your opponent is about to dish out an onslaught. Practise this when your in sparring, with your guard up ask your opponent to through a few shots with a bit in them and adjust your guard till none can get through.

    Also if he's flying in and you need a break, step in, and put the head over the shoulder, lean your bodyweight on him to tire him out but don't push back against him or you'll tire yourself. If he's pushing against you, turn him. You may get the idea of this while your sparring

    Throw straight shots, hooks and uppercuts in particular are technically more difficult to learn to throw technically correctly. If you can learn to throw straights shots hard and technically correct, you'll be in good shape for the fight. Straights are faster so can be landed quicker and your opponent will likely be swinging and be open to them. It will also be quite likely to be your strongest punch.

    Kill yourself on the bags and keep in mind when your wrecked that pushing that little bit more than your opponent while on the bags is going to be the difference between the 2 of you on the day, train hard, win easy.

    Good luck with it anyway, nothing feels better than a win on the day

    Focus on the basic stuff, high guard, straight punches and move your feet so your in/out of range when you choose to be, if you make that your focus you will do well.

    Had the first session last night and covered off some off the basics.
    A lot of learning to be done anyway!
