    Hey Guys and Girls,

Have about 2k to invest. This money is currently divided between them ****ty eircom shares i had years ago(in the vodafone shares i got) and in some Aviva shares i got a number of years ago. Just wondering, id like to move this money into something which will offer me some sort of capital gain in the long term, as neither of the current organisations appear to be going in the right direction.

Any help or whatever would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I have a similar amount that I've been preparing to put aside in the near future but from what I've read thus far (don't laugh but I'm actually reading the aptly-titled 'Stock Investing For Dummies'), with such a relatively small account we're probably better off considering mutual funds, as it'd be pretty difficult to build a steady, diversified portfolio with 2K.

I'd be interested in hearing what all the regulars on the thread think though.

Basically yes, €2K is virtually nothing, but you can use that amount in a CFD provider account with 0 leverage and no commission (it's in the spread but they are quite tight.) CMC Markets provides that kind of service. Be warned don't get sucked into leverage or gambling, simply put something in every month and watch it grow over time.

I wouldn't put all your savings into stocks, a large cash cushion can be very useful, especially if the markets blow up and you can then go shopping cheaply.

im in a similar boat. I received shares from my previous employer over 2 years as part of an employee share scheme that were held in trust for 3 years tax-free. As i no longer live in ireland, i missed the mail asking whether i wanted to keep them or sell them after this period, and they default paid me out. So now ive got 3.5k sitting in my irish current account, and am looking at share options.

What do people think about taking a punt on bank of ireland? Share price today is 13c.

Aviva are paying a fairly decent dividend these days.
I'd leave those where they are.
