Nightmare with tax refund

Hi, I have friend that is due to tax refund and still nothing so I want to ask you for your advice to help him.

    The story is :

He and his wife had 2 jobs (part-time) and also claimed some social welfare, some weeks they did work more hours so didn't get anything, some weeks they earned 50 euro.

Anyway they were paying emergency tax for long period and looking at their P60 I can see they paid from one job on 5000 salary over 1000 euro, second job was 8000 salary and over 1500 euro tax. Don't know exact numbers but just by having quick look at it I see it's definitelly much more than they should be taxed.

So they should get refund. You cannot be taxed on 13 000 salary 3000 euro tax! So I helped them to put their P60 details into revenue page and wait. But as he had financial difficulty he went in January asking for refund on their tax to tax office. They said next week. So he went again and they said next week. So he went again and they said in next 2 weeks and in 2 weeks he can come in and they would write him a cheque. So he went there in 2 weeks and they said they have to look into it again.

He went there in mid february and they said definitely in 4 weeks.

6 weeks later still nothing and they owe him (and his wife) few thousands, he really needs that as he needs to pay rent and electricity etc.

They stopped them their social welfare while ago when they worked less hours and ended up with 20 euro for the week (for food) while being owned huge money from revenue. They went to ask for help from local Community Welfare Officer but she only told them to wait for money from revenue.

They are working more hours now and are doing fine, but still it's almost April and Revenue has no interest to communicate with them, Welfare officer same.

They are really nice couple and they do not deserve to be treated like this.

Could you advise me what to do now? Where to turn?

Was thinking about local politicians but as they are foreigners I do not think they would care ether.

Unfortunately it can take months to process some refunds due to a combination of the time of year ( January through to April is the busiest time of year for PAYE) reduction in staff numbers, an increase in security checks on PAYE refunds and waiting on employers to file end of year returns. This is especially true in cases of multiple employments and Social welfare payments.

I would sit down with your friends and explain the above. Then I would write an email to the section dealing with the query asking what if anything else is required to get the refund issued. Chase it up within 1 week. If no further action/communication then contact the Regional office for whatever part of the country you are in to ask them to look into the issue for you/your friends.

Politicians are not glorified social workers. There are quite a few steps to go through before you should even think of this step. There is a guide to complaints with Revenue on their website.

Every record should be maintained so that in future our work does not suffer due to it. Tax refund is just like nightmare this quote is correct one.
