I am thinking of getting an Apple Tv. But would like to be able to play .avi and .mkv movies etc that I have on my computer through the Apple on to the Tv....do you know if this is possible?
I have a feeling the answer will be 'No' redface.gif

    You have a few options...

The first it to jailbreak the AppleTV and play whatever you want on it.

If you don't want to do that, you could use Subler remux .mkv files to .mp4 without quality loss and add them to iTunes and stream to the AppleTV. Remuxing doesn't take long.

You could probably reencode the .AVI files but it would be a lossy conversion. Reencoding can take a while and it's really worth it.

Airflick can send videos to your AppleTV without having to jailbreak it.

I use Flex player app (free)
Plug your phone in , open iTunes , click apps and look down to see flex player. Click that and there is an option to 'add '
Hit that and browse your computer for the avi file u want and it then adds it to the app

I don't have an ATV myself but I read you can stream transcoded video to it. This means the videos are recoded live and streamed to the ATV. Have a look at Airplay. Some people on there have had success.

It was originally designed to stream to the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad but it seems it now supports ATV. The forums on that site might shed more light on it for you.
