I did this as far as Carlow a few years back.

Its pleasant enough. The N9 is much quieter given the motorway. Road surface very good IIRC.

The last time I cycled to Kilkenny, I went via Blessington and I think I turned at Rathvilly to go to Carlow and then down. Google maps is saying to do Blessington, turn off at Hollywood for Dunlavin, Ballytore, Athy and then you'd be on the road to Kilkenny again. I don't know what it'd be like between Hollywood and Ballytore but I'd imagine it'd be grand.

It's as quiet a route out of Dublin as you'll find and the old N9 is easy to cycle on, if a little boring. The surface is good, it's wide in most places and not very busy.
