Maybe answered many times before but I'am new so...

The speed indicated on the express lane is 50kmh and I always try to be at or below this but some time the barrier does not open. Is it strictly 50kmh and below? Can be most annoying especially with someone tailgating you.

    Depends on the toll.

M4 @ Enfield is set fairly low and the barrier is timed so that you can't do much more than 50km/h or you'll hit it. If somebody is tailgating me I just go to the change only lanes so the freeloader will get caught (yes it's worth the minute or so to watch their faces in the mirror).

M6 @ Cappatagle is much higher and the barrier lifts immediately.

Yep, you can drive through at 100.

Mind you, if you have a problem and your tag doesn't read, it's a bit tight to change out of the lane at that speed.

I know some people won't agree with it but I like the way the M4 is timed to make you slow down, otherwise if the tag doesn't read you'll be testing your breaks & tires

The timing on the Waterford bypass is set so that if you're going much more than 60KPH it gets interesting.

Funnily enough for the first year it used to open instantly so many people wouldn't even slow down but then one day they introduced the delay resulting in quite a few skid marks in the lane! A week later they added a foam wraparound thing to the barrier! :D

The barrier at Cappataggle only looks solid, you could drive through at 50 with the barrier shut and do no damage.

    But don't tell anyone...

It leaves a (rub-off-able) red mark on your A pillar.... bloke in front of me was reverse-tailgating and went through on my barrier lift!

The M6 express lane is great. You only have to slow down to 70-80kmh and that's pretty comfortable; you'd be able to exit the express lane if your tag didn't read. 90kmh is probably beginning to push it a little bit.

I don't like the M4 one at all. Even at 50kmh, you are left wondering if it will list until the last second.

Are you sure? I know a guy who hit it and it made sh1t of his windscreen. He also had to pay for the barrier to be fixed..

Yes, I hit it a fair slap, not a mark.
