Why can't log table be used for a 3rd year science practical exam?

I had a lab exam the last day that uses an awful lot of scientific notation and they wouldn't give out log tables. I thought they had to provide these at these type of exams?

Complain to the lecturer/course coordinator/whoever it is that set the thing. If you are unhappy with the answer you get, take it to the faculty head.

Apparently the exam was designed to examine some of the content which is in the log table....
