This might interest some of you :

As part of the OPW Phoenix Park Management Plan, Chesterfield Ave between the Phoenix roundabout and the Mountjoy roundabout, will be closed to vehicular traffic at weekends with effect from 7th April 2012.

You'll notice now there are actually bollards built into the ground, which will be lifted up at weekend.

Good. Now how about a bus route through the Park to allow non-motorists to access it.

How about keeping the cycle lanes for cyclists only? OPW get the finger out.

    Isn't the point to walk/cycle?

now how about removing it as a heavy commuter route on weekdays? Weekend traffic is not that big a deal in comparison and probably facilitates more people entering and using the park than otherwise...

What needs to happen is more radical - the removal of the ability to drive through the park (in one gate and out the other) and to cruise around the park.

All motorist gates should be cul-de-sacs, leading to parking areas no more than half a km inside the park. The bulk of the centre of the park would then be free for humans and animals - walkers, joggers, cyclists.

I realise special access will be required for the lucky residents of the park, and places like Farmleigh, but this traffic will be sparse compared to the rat run the park is today.

    Radical - yes.

    Possible - yes.

I have to say I have mixed feelings on this. I live extremely close to the park and as such get to use it probably a hell of alot more than most. It really has some great cycle tracks, and so many different types of running tracks, plus the huge benefit of just being able to sit out and watch the world go by and with the current weather we're having its probably a hell of a lot more fun then going to the beach ;)

    However;

When its got road closures, or restricted access, traffic on the ring roads/surrounding roads of the park is chaotic. This becomes more apparent at this time of the year, as running events are held, and then moreso during the summer with concerts.

Also there are still huge parts of the park that really need more attention, the lower half is really poor. Loads of beer bottles, barbie rubbish etc, is regularly dumped/littered across the place. There is also some lovely spots which could be easily adapted into more family friendly/less initimidating areas.

Having said all that I do agree something needs to change, from the simple to the most radical.

-Teach people what cycle lanes are for :pac:
-Develope the lower half to be more family friendly, and less rent boy !
-More bins !!! although I doubt this will cure the habits of the litterbugs
-Maybe do like the above poster said ? and perhaps traffic solutions for the surround areas would then be created.

I said it on the D15 forum but I think it's a great idea, it will remove the virtual restriction imposed by traffic right through the centre of the park on enjoying the full area. I know when I go with the toddler and dogs I usually have to plan on what side of the park I want to walk around before hand as it's just not good trying to cross from one side to the other.
The lack of pedestrian crossings is a weird one.
