I have some nice victorian oak chairs but with a very dark patina.
I'd like to bring them back as near as possible to thier original oak finish.

Whats the best product/technique to use? I have been using methylated spirits to disolve the wax and varnish but its a very slow process.

This is just me D, but I'd not be removing the patina. Cleaning them alright and then finish off with some old fashioned beeswax based furniture wax.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
