Given grant in error

Last September I was approved for the grant, which would cover full tuition fees. Everything seemed fine until a few days ago when I received a letter from my college stating that my fee payment was overdue. It turns out that the county council made a pretty serious screw-up and approved me for the grant when I'm apparently ineligible. I was never notified of this as they said they only discovered the error recently.
Now I have the college breathing down my neck for more than €8,000 which I certainly don't have.

If I was told at the beginning of the year that I had been denied the grant I would have dropped out then and there, but to tell me now and to expect me to just pay up seems a little far fetched, not to mention completely unfair.

Is there anything I can do here?

Tuition is just over €6000, plus €2000 student contribution which the grant is also supposed to cover.

Tell the county council you are not satisfied with the process at all - that you feel that you are entitled to the grant based on the original letter and that you will pursue this to the Ombudsman then contact the ombudsman

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

It is - once you meet the criteria for Free Tuition Fees - I suspect the OP didn't meet this criteria
