What does "Civil Status" refer to on the HSE forms anyone?
I have no idea what it may refer to.

Is it a referencce to single/married? Only the next question asks if you have been married anyway so I'm not sure.

    Thanks in advance.

It corresponds to what used to be knowns as marital status. Which form are you filling out? They usually ask it in the form of a multiple choice question, inviting you to tick one of about half-a-dozen boxes.

In the Dear Dead Days Beyond Recall marital status was simple. You were either single, married or widowed. Now, however, we've got:

    - single (i.e. never married or civilly partnered)
    - married
    - married but legally separated
    - in a civil partnership
    - divorced (your marriage was terminated by divorce)
    - civil partnership dissolved (your civil partnership was terminated by court dissolution)
    - Widowed (your marriage was terminated by the death of your spouse)
    - Suriviving civil partner (you had a civil partnership, but your partner died)

And for some purposes, the authorities may also need to know if you are:

    - unmarried and unpartnered, but cohabiting
    - married or civilly partnered, but living apart.

Digging up an old thread but with a similar question and related to the Op, what is the status of someone who is engaged but does not have a civil partnership, but are co-habitating?

My guess is - single (i.e. never married or civilly partnered) ?

    The options are :
    Married o
    Single 
    Separated o
    Widowed o
    Divorced o
    Civil Partner o
    Civil Partnership dissolved o

Yep, single. Single traditionally meant "not married", not "not in a relationship".
