Dell (win XP) stopped recognising USB Flash Drives

Dell using Win Xp will detect Usb flash drives but says the drives are not formatted & offers to format them.
This happens on all USB ports.
The USB drives work fine when connected to any other computer.
Anyone come across this problem or have a solution.
The USB ports work fine with K/board, mouse and Wifi adapter.

Load up a Linux Live CD with USB flash drive connected and see if it works. Then let's take it from there.

Use device manager to uninstall all the USB devices and then reboot. Windows will then automatically reinstall them.

Have a look in disc management, it might be conflicting with another drive/drive letter, if you can see it in Disk management just change the drive letter to something free.

Torqay: Booted with WinPE boot-cd and all USB drives are seen and recognised properly.

UCH: Tried changing drive letter in DisK Management, problem stays same.

When you boot from the cd can you access the data on the USB sticks.

what size is the USB in case it's > 128GB or something

was the key formatted or repaired in another PC ?

    NTFS or FAT32

do you have windows patched up to date

have you tried removing the usb controllers in device manager ?

It is happening for all USB keys (All work on other PCs)
    Keys are mostly 1 - 4GB
    All are FAT32
Have removed USB controllers and rebooted.
USB keys work on reboot if plugged in before reboot, but when safely removed and plugged back in the same problem arises. (the disk in drive H is not formatted etc)
    Windows is up to date.

I have a feeling that a Belkin USB Wifi adapter is part of this problem, as the Mass storage device (USB Key) seems to attach itself to the same Host controller as the Belkin adapter.
