Golf ball choice

Hi all. How do you know which ball suits your game best? I play off 16 and generally use nxt tours but tbh I have no idea why I identify with that particular ball. How do you know if one ball suits you better, eg Penta or pro v?

I like the Pro v's they are the perfect ball in my opinion.
They are great for the short game, especially during the summer when the ground is more firm. I find that the nxt's are too hard

Golf balls dont suit a game. They suit a wallet.

I use pro v1s practice, there 25 for 12. Each box had 6 pro v1 and 6 pro v1x. Never been hit just stamped with practice. They are also perfectly legal for comps.

    Best of both words really...

Started off using any old thing i found, then went to the Srixon Soft Feel and AD333. Really liked those, but tried out the NXT Tour and played them for a long while. One thing i find with them is they cut up really badly, god knows a Pro V must be destroyed after a round.

After not being happy with the state of the ball after a round, i switched over to the Bridgestone e6, and i'm delighted. Same feel as the NXT Tour, and generates the same amount of stop around the green, but the best thing is, they don't cut up anyway as bad.

For me when it goes over 2euro a ball , i need to get my head examined. I find the more expensive they are the more they rip up. I'm not good enough to pay or play a 3 euro ball.

I remember Top Flite had a Balata ball a few years ago but stopped producing it. Used that for ages. I have no ball loyalty at the moment. I'm not a big hitter so I gravitate towards the balls promoting extra distance.

My main concerns are endurance as well, tried Pro V1 in the past but they cut up badly after 3 holes. Once it has a bit of feel around the greens then I'm happy. Might take a look at the Bridgestone e6 mentioned above.

Are these not the refurbished Prov1 though? As in Lake Balls.
I read that they are not the same performance wise as the 'real deal' but again that may be marketing blurb from Titleist to get people to stump up the extra cash.

I'm surprised that more folks aren't using Bridgestone's tbh. I was always curious about them, so i bought a load of them as lakeballs 50c a pop, and haven't looked back since (as i mentioned above)

Plus when you loose a 50c ball, you don't die a little inside. I was with a friend who wouldn't be the worlds greatest golfer, who bought a box of Penta's when he was getting a few bits and pieces at American Golf. Since they were bundled together he didn't realise the cost of the ball. On one hole he lost 3 of them off the tee, when i told him how much they were worth, he nearly cried. He plays a pinnicle now.

As far as i know they the exact same as regular Pro V's. but they have some printing irregularity, or the shell might not be as white as it should be. So they just put the practice stamp on them and sell them on at a discounted rate instead of chucking them in the bin.

    From the horses mouth
Pro V1 Practice golf balls are conforming products that differ only due to a cosmetic blemish such as paint, ink or registration of stamping. Pro V1 Practice golf balls do not have any construction or performance deficiencies.

    Hi,
I use prov's i have a fast swing speed so i find them the best for distance and control. I never buy them new i get most from a guy on Adverts which are pick ups and not lake balls most have been hit once and are perfect. I never get more than a round out of a ball they are always destroyed by the wedges.

My fav ball of choice in the Callaway black (usually get some sent home from the states at xmas), but they are a far too expensive for the level of torture I inflict on a ball.

If Im buying, I like Srixon or Wilson Staff. Both do the job and to be honest I have a terrible habit of sticking with whatever ball I play well with as I deem it to be lucky (for a few weeks anyway ) ....... therein lies the solution, its whatever ball you feel happiest with.

thanks for the replies folks. but i still don't know how do i pick a ball that suits my game? Is it about more/less spin? Distance gains? Short game advantages? I am only off 16 so am i wasting my time buying pro v1's or pentas or should i be looking at 'softer' balls?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 138 ✭✭Davd

Been playing with Pro V1 practice balls that I picked up in Cunningham's in Galway for 28 euro a box. But prefer playing with Pro V1x's and just ordered some on Golfstoreeurope.com for 120 euro for 4 dozen - 30 a box. It's a special offer at the moment which includes free personalisation.

When I'm feeling flush...Pro V1..seem to hole more putts with them too.

On a budget, I find the Top Flight range more than adequate.

Hi OP you could have a look at

    http://www.titleist.com/golf-ball-fitting/

is pretty interesting in a nerdy sort of way and though its just about Titleist it may give you an idea what to play

Have a look at the Bridgestone B330 range. They have 4 in the range, kind of a ProV1/ProV1x equivalent for driver swing speeds > 105Mph and a ProV1/ProV1x equivalent for driver swing speeds < 105Mph. Decide which range your swing speed is in and try a sleeve of each to determine if you prefer the higher or lower spin balls

I use Nike PD Long balls not bad and I also get them from a guy on adverts. I'm still at the stage where golf ball selection is determined by how much it costs to repalce them as I still loose a few per round.

I'd be another fan of the Bridgestone range. Used the b330rx last summer and for the winter I've been using the E6. I was very impressed with the E6

Will probably go back to the B330rx for the coming months are the ground gets harder

For any Prov1/Prov1x devotees out there, golfstoreeurope.com is offering 4 dozen for €120, which is effectively 4 for the price of 3.

Is it not a case of deciding what compression suits your game and then selecting the ball from there!?

i play pro v1 / v1x used balls, cant justify the spend on new ones, greystones driving range sells excellent condition used ones for €2 a pop which is more than adequite for my needs.

Whatever I find or whatever I win. I haven't paid for a sleeve in a long time and I'm not playing anywhere near regularly or well enough to warrant spending any amount of money on them.

Upstairs in JJB Sports Blanch, next door to McGuirks as it happens, they're selling boxes of 12 PRO V1s and V1Xs for EUR16.99, or two boxes for EUR25. They're classed as lake balls and have a couple of scuff marks on them but you'd get away with them for comps. At that price, you can't go wrong.
