I know its a bit early and maybe in the wrong thread but ah well !
My school told us to apply for work experience soon, as all the good places go usually before September.
So where are you applying for your work experience placements, I need ideas ?!

I dunno, probably a local factory and learn some stuff about engineering. If I don't get that, I don't know what I'll go for

I'm interested in computers but I'm from a rural are so I wouldn't be able to go to any companies which is a bummer. I'll probably end up going to a primary school. I's hate it but there's pretty much nothing else.

Im in TY at the moment, but I thought Id give my two cents in relation to the whole work experience thing :L I live in a rural area, but its close to Dublin and fortunately there is a regular bus into Dublin, so my options weren't limited :o

Firstly - Dont just settle for something ****ty if you dont have an interest in it! It will be torture and its just a waste of time :L Work Experience is seriously and invaluable experience to get to go anywhere you want just to see what its like, and this is one of the only opportunities you'll get to do some of these jobs, so make the most of it :')

I've done 4 w/e's this year, 2 of them were for full weeks, and the other two I did every Wednesday (My school set up w/e to be every wednesday, and we are suppose to do 3 different places for 10 wednesdays each, but I couldn't find anywhere that would take me so I took 2 weeks off XD)

    Ive been to:
    - The Natural History Museum - A really good experience if you have an interest in biology/zoology and history, I got to do a lot of work in the archives and I got to go to rte one of the days because the guy i was working with was appearing on a show, and the opening of a new enclosure in the zoo another day, and basically got a taste of what sort of research goes on behind the scenes :)

    - The Science Gallery (TCD) - This was kind of a work experience, but more of a TY Week, I applied for w/e here but they said they only take on TY's for their week programme, so I did that :L It was really good though and I recommend applying for it if you want to study Science in College :) We got to help out in the gallery, but we also got tours of Trinity, we got to sit in on lectures, develop phone apps, and do some work in the labs

-Amgen (pharmaceutical company) I did a full week here and it was AMAZING :D I really enjoyed it! I was assigned to the Chemistry Quality Control labs and each day I worked with a different person and I got a real sense of what its like to work in real working labs, so much so I now hope to do that in the future :') They also gave me €50 euro payment and offered me work during the summer so that was quite nice too :D

-Primary School (Junior School J.I-2nd class) - I know everrrybodyyy goes to Primary Schools, and the only reason I did was because I needed something to do on Wednesdays, but now I'm really glad I decided to! Teaching was something I'd never considered and if I wasn't so set on studying science I would actually consider teaching as a career. I have also developed quite a love of laminating and photocopying, which is basically all I do XD As well as the general office work I get to bring the kids to the library and help out with art classes and music. I've never been very good with kids and this has actually helped me come out of my shell a bit more, and its worth it simply just for that :L

Hope this helped someone a bit :)

You're lucky how you're near Dublin but I'm in rural midlands... LIT(Tipperary) is close enough but I don't know if they'd take someone in for computing, although it would be good to inquire. I'd like to do engineering but no way could I achieve higher level at LC :/ Thanks for your input, very informative, Indiego :)
