Wife decided to put a tenner on the Gold Cup so went to Paddy power, opened an account and paid a tenner through Paypal......MBNA Credit card charged me 2.50 as a gambling charge which shocked me as I wasnt aware of this charge but it is legit as they sent out a new terms and conditions leaflet 2 years ago which I promptly binned.

I just wondered can they do this as I paid through Paypal?? Think I know the answer

Worst part of the story was that the wife wanted a tenner on the nose for Synchronised and I persuaded her to put 5 euro each way instead so she "lost" 60 euro already.

Yes, they can. It's because you're effectively using a cash advance, which all cards charge an additional fee for.

Using a debit card, or Paypal cash balance, would not incur such a charge.

Now go ahead and open an eBay account and sell.

Then you can have someone else pay the money into your Paypal.

Might be an even-money bet , but a guaranteed winner .!
