I'm travelling to Amsterdam at easter for two nights - I am looking for a good hostel (or hotel) that is comfortable, affordable and friendly (travelling solo) located in a central area.I'm looking for your recommendations that meet all the above criteria.

    Thanks.

greenhouse effect is a bar and coffee shop that have good value rooms and allow smoking in the bar. i stayed there last november and it was clean and comfortable. its on wormoesstraat so is close to everything youll need in amsterdam. 5 mins from central station http://www.greenhouse-effect.nl/hotel.html

the winston is also a nice spot. i stayed there last april and staying again next week. its clean and comfortable and has cheap drinks at the bar (no smoking) there is no coffee shop attached but its also on warmoesstraat so you have 5 or 6 very close. http://www.winston.nl/

personlly i prefered greenhouse effect as i love the aul coffee shops :D

Thanks for the suggestions monthy python.Any other recommendations? I'm not to fussed whether there's a coffee shop attached or not however I would rather not have people smoking all round in the dorm as I am not big into it.

the winston is all non smoking except the smoking area so that would be the better one for you
it has a night club next door to it

The bulldog in the RLD is handy too and reasonable, bar which has smoking and drinking and games room downstairs.

The white tulip is another option. It has an irish bar on the ground floor and again is in a great location.

Personally, I'd avoid hotels on Warmoestraat or in the red light district in general. Particularly so when nicer options are available 10mins walk away.

The Van Onna Hotel is on a lovely little canal (the Bloemgracht) in the Jordaan area. It's clean, quiet, free WIFI & extraordinarily good value. 2mins from Anne Frank House & the Westerkerk, 5mins from Dam square.

En suite rooms are basic but well kept & staff are great. Not a place for stags or folks who wanna spark up in the room, but it ain't stuffy either - the place attracts a broad range of types and ages.

p.s. Despite 'first post' suspicions, the above is a 100% shill-free recommendation.

the old nickel is a good option for a solo traveller,5 mins from station, red lights, newmarkt square.it has a bar attached too.I've been there many times.not a hostel, but a budget hotel.if your willing to spend a few bob the prins hendrik hotel is pretty good.it also has a bar.i would avoid anywhere on damrak.except maybe swissotel on dam square,or Victoria hotel on the station end.these two would be quite expensive mind.have a good time

I didn't want to leave the Greenhouse Effect when it was time to go.. the apartment we had was awesome and in such a great area! Would definitely reccommend!

Im looking for a room also.

I went to trip advisor to check out the recommendations in the tread.

van onna - 1 star hotel - code for sh1thole.

greenhouse effect - very noisy all night

bulldog - bunkbeds, 3 electrical sockets per 10 person room. No place to leave cash/valuables bar a rickity bedside cabinet.

is it possible to get a private room in a decent place for about E50 a night in an area close to clubs/RLD that is not full of teenagers 10 to a room?

after a bit more searching it appears i also need to mention that i want my own bathroom and these are advertised as hotels that im looking at!

Very central, but not in red light district, loads of restaurants, shops etc within 5 mins walk. Also, only minutes away from railway station.

You're assumption is way off tbh.

    Did you read Tripadvisor reviews?

Guests rate it 4/5. That'd be an odd achievement, were it found to be a 'Sh1thole'.

It's basic, no frills - hence the 1 star, I stayed there occasionally when attending uni in Utrecht and had pals who bedded down there during the Icelandic ashcloud. As I said above, it's clean, staff are decent, located on a nice canal etc.

    En Suite singles for €50

If you're looking for a €50 room near Warmoestraat, De Wallen or Nieuwmarkt (i.e. within or bordering RLD, chances are it will be a dump).

Also, not many clubs around that area (unless leather chaps is your thing :p)
