Can anyone recommend a place to repair this? I've got a friend with one of those Seagate upright external HDs (Looks like this).

The trouble is that the mini USB port in the device has collapsed back inside and isn't accessible.

He was going to use this place; www.datarecoverydublin.ie/index.php

But I've not heard anything about them and fear they could be very expensive for a simple job.

Open the case, remove the hard drive and put it into a new enclosure. It'll cost you less than 20 Euro.

    Does anyone know if
    A) it would be a 3.5 size HD?
    B) how to open one of these? There's no obvious screws.

what model no is it ,how old is it, if less than 400gb its very likely sata drive .SEE the label on it.if theres no screws ,pry the case open gently with a screwdriver ,place on a cushion to avoid hitting a table top while doing this.
CAN you remove stand, the screws maybe covered up by the stand ,base unit.

3.5" drive, SATA, even 2.5" SATA drives can be mounted easily in a computer if you have one, no need to be buying caddies. It is probably closed via plastic tabs securing it, look here I think might be the same?

heres the link for your model,
http://thydzik.com/how-to-disassemble-a-seagate-freeagent-pro/ that i got from the post above.EVEN if you break 1 or 2 tabs the case will still be usable, try the coat hanger trick as above to release the tab.
    SEE here http://www.easeus.com/resource/install-sata-hard-drive.htm
most pcs after 2007 will have a sata data port on the motherboard ,and a sata power cable on the power supply,ie it should not be necessary to buy a sata pci card,if buying a caddy if drive is 3.5inch ,
get 3.5inch caddy.a pc techie could put a new usb port on the case , it would probably be cheaper to buy a caddy .
