Two British soldiers have been killed in the south of Afghanistan after an Afghan soldier opened fire on them.

Details are still emerging but the defence secretary, Philip Hammond, confirmed the deaths to the Commons. An Afghan police official said the shooting took place at the gates of a Nato base in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital of Helmand.

An Afghan army truck approached the base and was reportedly refused entry by the guards, saying it was not authorised to bring weapons inside. The official said one of the Afghan soldiers then rushed through the gate and opened fire on those inside, killing the two soldiers before being shot and killed himself.

The incident comes as part of a growing trend of Afghan security

Tragic, but lets not ignore that the Brits aren't the only ones out there. Today 7 Afghan police officers, an Afghan translator and a US soldier died in an explosion.

" A roadside bomb exploded moments after a security patrol arrived to defuse it in Afghanistan killing a U.S. soldier and eight Afghans. The blast occurred in the southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province last night. Afghan security personnel and U.S.-led coalition forces were about to defuse the improvised explosive device at Kohak village in Arghandab district. " 03:46 GMT, 26 March 2012

A bit of a morbid website but it gives a breakdown of Coalition military casualties and deaths by Provinces and Year.

There is a search feature on that website, you can search by rank, 4 Colonels killed, 23 Lieutenant Colonels, 38 Majors and 1 Brigadier General who was a Non-Hostile Casualty.

He was travelling in a Viking when it got hit by an IED. By all accounts he was very much of the 'lead from the front' school of leadership; used to go to the front of a convoy and scan for IED's himself.

The L/Cpl who died yesterday, shot by an Afghan soldier, was called Foley.

No relation to me, except that he was a brother-in-arms.
