Fertiliser Spreading

Just lookin for some tips on fertiliser spreading as bought a 2nd hand cosmo single disk shaker the other day. my questions may seem basic but i have not spread fertiliser before as we got a neighbour to do it and dont want to look around and see it all wasted
First of all for silage fields am going spreading yara silage cut think it 24-6-12. i have heard about 3 bags to the acre should be perfect. have 6 acres to take. good dry land with a bit of growth already.
what width does this shaker cover is it approx 10m?
what gear to be in spreading(massey 135) i would assume 2nd gear takin it bout 10k handy but again not sure bear in mind speedometer is not working.
what setting to leave the guage at the bottom for leting the fertiliser out to the desired rate @, the lad i bought it of said about midway between open and closed for silage manure spreading. there are about 12 settings. any other tips greatly appreciated.
also thinking of spreading nitrogen on some of grazing land as gone a bit strong for slurry at the mo with the weather. i have been told about 1bag per acre is adequate.
i will get some help when starting off spreading anyway from more experienced neighbour but just want to have the basics off.

it will be trial and error TBH. set the spreader 1/3 open and drive in second high at highish enough (about 3/4 throttle at least) and see how you get on, if it goes out too light you can always go again...

Is it a small 5 or 6 bag machine? you will only want to be leaving around the width of the tractor between passes. It doesn't throw very far. They are not an accurate spreader, but will get the job done ;)

Go around in a ring. NOT up and down on the same side anyway. The single spinner due to it's design (spreader vanes spinning clockwise), tends to throw more fertiliser to the right no matter how you try set it. By going around the same way you'I compensate for this on the next pass.

Best of luck. You'I know in a few weeks how well you've done :D

You can tip around in top no bother if your land is flat, otherwise you'I be all day at it;)

cheers lads good advice, tis a 600 weight machine so 5or 6 bags ya. is the weather a factor at all. would it be ok to put it out in this very dry spell. also am i right in sayin theres no problem spreading where there is already some growth approx 3 or 4in of grass cover. the width factor is interesting i would have thought it was a bit wider but i can guage it when spreading anyway.

you will figure out the width fairly easily on the move as you say. you will get a better throw (esp on lower HP tractor) by keeping the revs high

What I found good to gauge in the beginning was to look at a field size and just add the right number of bags for that field only.
You'll quickly notice if your spreading at too high a rate.
Then once you know the right settings/speeds you can belt away happy out.

Not to start a new thread, so i'll just add to this.

I'm trying to figure out the best setting for Granular Urea.
I have settings for most of the other fertilisers - 18.6.12 , CAN, 0.7.30 etc but haven't spread Urea for a long time, so no record of the settings.
It's bulkier in the bags so will it flow out slower out of the spreader?

If you have a setting for say can at 30units/acre the same setting will normally give 30units of urea (provided it is spreading to the same width, urea wont always travel as far as its lighter) due to it being bulkier, or atleast thats what we find.

So at a guess, would the setting for 3 bags of 0.7.30 per acre be the same for 2 bags of Granular Urea per acre or would I want to go slightly less.
I will have an idea once I have the first field done, but it would be nice to have a good starting point.;)

I'm not really sure, never spread 0.7.30 so not sure what way it works. I know that 12 on the amazone here is roughly 30units driving at 12k and 12m width and it would be around the same units if spreading can at 12m!

If you get a mark - that is if a mark does 1 cwt urea per acre etc write it down somewhere you will find it again.

I'd say the normal 75/80 or 75/90 would be fine.
