Right on all accounts probably - Will buy all that **** anyway apart from the reflectors.

It's lidl so that means even if you just go in for bread then you'll come out with a chainsaw or bicycle stuff...

Anyone know how decent the toolbox is? Do the tools cover a range of sizes, Shimano, Campag, etc.? Or if I buy it will I find 80% of the tools are useless for my kit, and the other 20% I already have?

The chain cleaner is probably worth a go for €6 if you don't have a power link already on your chain.

I have the chain cleaner. Got it about 2 years ago. It's very good. Chain is immaculate after a few twists. When the fluid that came with it ran out I started using petrol. Works perfectly.

I literally bought all of that stuff besides the reflectors last week for much much more! Quality is probably better but even so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,277 ✭✭✭km991148

perfect.. was looking for a chain cleaner.. gives me an excuse not to clean for another week :)

Anyone had the backpack before? Other than easy access pockets, what makes it good for cycling?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

I'm not a fan of chain cleaners. Good for the first run when they are new and clean. After that they become less effective. I've cleaned my chain a lot better with good de-greaser, brush and a rag.

Tool kit could be promising though.

Similar looking tool kits are about €60+ elsewhere. I might give this one a bash, of course I would then have much less excuses for getting professional work done on my bike.

I have the toolkit, I've used the cone spanners, pedal spanners, cassette remover on ultegra kit and it works fine. The chain whip and chain breaker are not a great fit for a HS shimano but do the job. Campy snobs would be better of avoiding :P

I've been meaning to replace my backpack. Does anyone know if these are anyway decent? They seem rather cheap.

Loads of stuff left in the one in Rathmines. Got two chain cleaners, a repair kit and a backpack. Repair kit has a few nice bits in it. Haven't got a clue what some things are though.

Note to self: DO NOT USE CHAIN CLEANER INDOORS!!

Having said that, the nice rug with the oil stains on it will at least make the dog house a bit more comfortable for me over the next few days...

The chain cleaner seem to be the only item that's really selling.

    Rathmines: none left
    Cork St: 10 Left
    Thomas St.:3 Left

Was just about to. Then I read this. Thanks. Is the cleaning fluid any good for getting cleaning fluid off tiles...?

What's the quality of the backpacks like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭Darkglasses

What's the quality of the backpacks like?

I bought the black one, the smallest one at 20 litres. Accessing the big pocket isn't as intuitive as it should be, but it feels nice on the back and there's both a chest and belly strap to get it snug so it won't fall around. Haven't tested it carrying heavy stuff yet but the seams all appear as strong as anything else at that price range. Bazillions of pockets and comes with a high-vis water-proof bib attached that folds into an underneath pocket. I do like the fleece-lined glasses pouch, and the helmet pouch.

Don't know, I filed those two little bottles away and am using the degreaser I had already

I had a look inside them in the shop, there is a big pocket in the main compartment that looked like it might take a hydration bladder and a hole at the back that might take a hose. I already have a CamelBak but was going to recommend one to one of my mates.

just bought the big tool kit, seems good quality surprisingly doesnt have a bb bracket tool which is a downside. does have a huge tool which i have no idea what its for.. could be replaced with the bb tool but apart from that its good.

Just back from the one in Rathmines again, nothing left except the lights sets.

Got the backpack.. Great price and it has the yellow cover in a small pocket at the bottom of bag of which is cool. Got the pump and small bag for under the saddle last week... Brilliant deals :D

Back to the backpack.. I got it in the red colour and think it was also the largest of the bags.. Plenty of room for my work gear and shoes. Will try it in the morning.

    Just brilliant :D

Got the tool kit in Bray (plenty left at 5pm).

Most of it seems of reasonable quality, but the one tool I actually need to use pretty soon (the freewheel remover) doesn't seem to fit.

I tried it first on my Campag cassette (having read that this is the same fitting as Shimano freewheel), no dice, the tool was a little bit too big. Fair enough, not advertised as such.

Tried it then on the 7 speed freewheel on the hybrid. Even worse fit...nowhere near engaging.
Any thoughts, do these yokes need to be whacked into place, or should the just slot in?
Or is there some other widely used standard that's just a little bit bigger than Shimano, and that this tool might work with:rolleyes:?

No back pack in Tallaght near closing but loads of the toolkits left and a load of mini saddle bag puncture repair kits. Tools are clunky but not bad quality, haven't tried them out for fit yet.

Which Tallaght branch were you in, I'm looking for the tool kit?

Got the last chain cleaner in my local lidl today - thanks for the heads up as otherwise the spare bedroom would have been destroyed

Anyone know of a store with backpacks left? A colleague in work missed out and is trying to locate one. Thanks

This is probably no help to you at all, but I'm not sure where you are.

Shannon still had plenty of backpacks at 5 pm tonight (and one less at 5:05pm tonight).

There's a Lidl in Naas (Newhall?) I dropped into this week that has pretty much lots of everything, bar perhaps the carrier (but no one wanted that, right?). Was tempted by the bag and the race version of the helmet(more holes, speed holes, perhaps!), but resisted. In fact I was pretty chuffed that I managed to get the vest compression thing that I wanted, and managed to avoid spending €50 on stuff I didn't need.

I have defeated your siren call, Lidl/Aldi specials!

(god only knows what I'll be tracking down in Aldi next week).
