    I don't think there's a massive difference between a portable or desktop HDD seeing as the PS is mains powered and won't be moved often (correct me).

    You'd get a cheaper desktop HDD for the same storage in a portable HDD. It'll have to be formatted to FAT32 before it can be recognised and thus will have a 4gb file size limit.

    I can't really judge though, I use a €40 media player that plays everything I throw at it in HD.

    Alright but i would be moving the hard drive from time to time aswel the last one i had just stopped getting recognised would that of been the problem that i was moving it

    If you're moving it from time to time it doesn't really matter whether it's a desktop/portable, as long as it's within reach of a power source.

    Despite their names as portable HDD, they're manufactured to be kept in one place and not moved around as much as you would think. It may be that the fault was caused by a knock or something.

    It's quite late atm, but a quick search throws up this as being the cheapest 1tb desktop HDD on Amazon. I'm sure someone will find a cheaper one online somewhere :)
