I can't see it happening but it would be great for the profile of Treviso, Italian rugby and the Pro12 in general if it did.

As above I don't think it will happen. However as much as it would make an already difficult trip to Treviso more difficult I would absolutely love to see it happen.

This would be a big statement for the Pro 12. Would love to see it happen and see other big name signings to other teams in the Pro 12.

Italy isn't exactly overflowing with quality outhalves at the moment so Carter taking up one spot could be a big problem. Sure he can play 12 though!

Imagine the attraction of McCaw and Carter in your local ground when playing Treviso, it should certainly boost the turnstiles.

I don't think it's as unlikely as some people. Would you turn down a million quid to spend 6 months in Italy?

It's a step in the right direction, but Italy needs more than a couple of marquee mercenaries to raise the profile of the game, imo. What use is it to have McCaw and Carter, if nobody has a clue who they are? I've been here nearly six months and so far I've spoken to only one bloke in my town who's interested in Rugby - and he's originally from France. The games aren't shown live on terrestrial TV, the press don't give it a lick of coverage and because they perceive the national team as crap, Italians don't care about the results. And I'm in the North of Italy, where I'm pretty sure the game is supposedly at its most popular.

well there goes the April 1st gag I was going to try and pull

edit: due to the nature of the signings I going to leave this as a separate thread as if pulled off, talk of it could drag the other thread way off topic

It'd be a terrible retrograde move. The Italians are horrendously short of depth at ten; Brunel pointed this out when he took the reins of the national side. The two Heineken Cup slots are under the control of the national federation; if Aironi and Treviso don't fall in line and focus on producin Italian players in key positions, they could lose out on European rugby. Whatever about McCaw, having Carter would be disastrous for Italian rugby.

And what if Carter comes in and his experience improves the 10s that are there already? Like Rocky with the Leinster back row or Howlett with the Munster wingers or Pienaar with the Ulster half backs? Etc.

It's a couple of months, its not like treviso will be able to cast aside their IQ (Italian Qualified) options. It's like Leinster signing Thorn.

Can you imagine the signing of McCaw attracted Parisse home? :/ I'd make the trip to Italy just for that!

Carter and Toddy have already confirmed it was a nothing rumour.

Having someone to model yourself on is great when you're a young developing player, but havind Dan Carter ahead of you in the queue for the ten jersey for the five months leading up to the 2013 Six Nations would wreck the Italian campaign for at least a year. They'd be a single injury away from having their entire campaign hinge on a player with a handful of substitute appearances all season. Development in the way you describe can work well, but closing out one of the two opportunities to get sustained gametime in a massively important game is very different to Ruan Pienaar (with Reddan, Murray and Boss all getting significant gametime in a nine jersey) or even Rocky (who took one of the nine starting backrow berths between Munster, Leinster and Ulster).

The rumour is that the president of Treviso is preparing to make a bid and judging by his comments it seems true. Carter's management said he hadn't received an offer, which doesnt contradict the rumour.

I don't agree. Having a player like Carter would be brilliant for Italian rugby. Just because it means there is 1 instead of two Italians starting (in Italy) for the short term so be it. And given they wouodnt be involved until about November its only a couple of month before February. It's not like Burton not starting would be a massive loss given Brunel seems to want to look elsewhere.

Play Carter at 12 or second five eighth! Then he can be an on field guidance to any incumbent out half.

If the NZRU were to pick a league for them to go to it would the Rabo and the Italian teams if you ask me. To a degree alot of teams put out weaker teams against the Italians in the Pro12 and the league isn't as attritional as the French or English leagues.

It would be very interesting to see Gori, Semenzato, Carter, Benvenuti... That's an extremely dangerous proposition.

I'd say life is pretty good already when you're Dan Carter.
