We have seen that all managers make mistakes in judging a players ability. Are there any players out there you were wishing your club to buy that ended up being ponies?

    Mine:-

    Malcolm Christie.

    Chris Riggott.

    Stephen Hughes.

    Shaun Maloney.

For a while i was pissed that Arsenal didnt sign Ryan Babel... Lets just say after a few months I was glad Liverpool had him

I was only a young'in when I watched the 1998 world cup and really wanted us to sign Denilson

His fancy tricks and flicks fooled me at the time, but he eventually didn't amount to what I had expected at a young age.

Not on a personal level but I remember Sunderland fans being very disappointed when they missed out on signing David Nugent in Summer 07, he had been arguably the best player in the championship the season just gone. Pompey bet them to the race and within weeks he was linked with Derby and ended up having a dreadful season. Never been the same player since just couldn't handle the step-up.

He may well have been a different player altogethef had he gone to Arsenal rather than Liverpool and spent time under Wenger. He'd have suited Arsenals way of playing more imo.

I was kind of pissed that Villa missed out to Everton for James Beattie back in the summer of 2005. He turned out to be a massive flop on Merseyside and his career has gone downwards ever since. We did end up signing Milan Baroš for the same sort of money who wasn't much better to be fair.

I played way too much Championship Manager/Football manager and couldnt believe it when Liverpool didnt sign the likes of:

    Freddy Adu
    Bobby Zamora
    Bakirclou (Something like that)
    Kim Kallstrom
    Cherno Samba
    Frey (Parma Keeper)
And of course had no idea why they didnt pick up Teribo West on a free transfer back in 00 or whenever it was.

I literally came into this thread to post the name of David Nugent :pac:

Our first season back in the Premier League and he was our main target. We badly needed a striker as our main goalscorer in the Championship, David Connolly, had been crocked once again and Stokes and Murphy were completely inexperienced at the top level.

Nugent had tore up the Championship with Preston that season and Keane went all out to get him. I think we bid around £6m for him and then Portsmouth got involved and he ended up there and within a couple of months was told he could leave the club. I suppose he did win a FA Cup medal but his career has hardly gone as it looked like it would back in 2007.

We eventually ended up with Chopra and Jones who scored some vital goals for us and kept us up. Based on Nugent's form since 07 who knows what would have happened if we'd ended up with him.

Any Sunderland fan will give you the same answer to the question posed in the title though, Nugent is always the one we're glad we missed out on.

On the opposite side of things, we were a couple of hours away from getting Leighton Baines from Wigan in the same summer window, IIRC Wigan accepted a £6m bid and he had agreed to come up and discuss personal terms and that got sorted, he was due to have a medical the next day but Everton became seriously interested. He's definitely the one that got away over the last few years anyway!

Yeah iirc Nugent was on holidays at the time and Keano was getting impatient at his unwillingness to get in contact with Sunderland. Pompey then came in and signed him. He had ran riot in the championship the season before, even gaining an England cap (to date his sole cap!), which (a championship player getting an England cap) is unheard of. Would've been interesting to see how he got on at ye alright. Pompey was never really going to suit him as well as Sunderland I feel; he'd have strolled into yer side but he was competing with players like Defoe, Kanu, Benjani, Utaka and Baros at Pompey if I'm right.

All legends in Championship Manager 2. never heard of any of them IRL so enjoy the wiki links (except Scott because he doesn't have one)!

Mido was another bullet Sunderland dodged. Keane again bid £6m (there's something strange about this £6m figure as every player I've mentioned so far have been £6m :pac:), but he backed out when he heard of Middlesbrough's interest, ended up going there and getting relegated that season with about 4 league goals to his name.

Matthew Upson was another. We tried to sign him last summer, offering West Ham £6m again  for him, but he said he was ''too good for Sunderland'' and rejected the move.

Others were two Wigan players in Maynor Figueroa (I actually wanted us to sign him ) and Mauro Boseilli. Guy Demel is another.

    There's been loads really.

One I would liked for us to sign was Salvador Cabanas, but he was shot in the head a few days before he was due to fly over to us. Gives another meaning to the term ''dodged bullet'' I suppose (sorry).

    No, Krasic is actually crap.

One of the worst buys Juve have ever made IMHO.

I wanted Milan to sign Amauri (every club in Europe wanted to sign him though, in fairness) when Juve got him from Palermo.
I Thought Manuele Blasi was going to be the next Gattuso when he was at Perugia.

I am sure there are more.

Really doesn't suit Italy I think.

Could see him doing well in germany or Holland though. Maybe even worth a punt by an English club, at the right price (would need to be a low risk price though).

However, regardless of league I think his temperament is something any club would need to keep a very close eye on.

My own addition would be Ricardo Quaresma for Liverpool at the time he joined Inter.

Guilty on Quaresma too, I even have a Porto shirt with his name on the back.

Another FM legend from the old days - Timo Hildebrand :o

Saviola - Didnt turn out crap either just didnt live up to the hype.

Emre - Went to newcastle and was poor.

Diouf - Went to pool and I thought he was going to be the next Henry.

Not so much wishing we'd "buy" them but excited at their arrival that didn't turn out to be any good would be

    Alan Moore
    Harpal Singh
    Conor Powell

He had a good start with Juve and looked like he might live up to the hype but has just went downhill from there. I'd like to see him given another chance in a different league because he showed at CSKA that he does have lots of ability.
