You can get the 90 or 145 bus to the city centre and then a bus out . Check the dublin bus website , thats should tell you what bus to get.

Buy a Travel90 bus ticket for €21.50 which covers 10 journeys. One journey consists of as many bus trips as you please provided the last validation is done within 90 minutes of the first.

Get the 145 from outside Heuston Station and at any bus stop between D'Olier St. and Foxrock Church, get off and pick up the 46A at the same stop, the Burlington Hotel, Donnybrook Church or the top of Kildare St. are handy stops where you can switch. The 145 stays on the N11 after Foxrock Church and goes all the way to Kilmacanogue, the 46A turns left at the church and continues direct to Dun Laoghaire where it terminates at the Dart Station.

Having first validated the ticket on the 145, when you validate the ticket on the 46A it will say 'free transfer' so the two bus trips combined will cost you €2.15.

Coming back, get off the 46A at any stop between where it joins the N11 (first stop is opposite Foxrck Church) and Suffolk St. and catch an inbound 145 which will drop you back to Heuston Station.

Dart would be quicker than 46a, no?
7 is generally quicker CC-DL than 46a too in my experience

The train is definitely faster than the 46A. I've been on the bus for 1 hr + from Dun Laoghaire but the train gets you into town in about 30 mins or so. Probably a bit less, actually.

You're probably right on the 7 being quicker than the 46A to DL as it's a more direct route.

OP, you'd have just two options for the transfer from the 145 to the 7, either get off the 145 in D'Olier St. and walk back to the 7 stop on O'Connell Bridge, or better to get off in Nassau St. and walk to the 7 stop which is very close.

But if he's commuting to DL, he will be on an outbound bus in the morning which will be running against the flow and v.v. in the evening.

Bus option is definitely the cheapest and don't you have to walk miles to get the Dart in Connolly?

Don't know about getting the Dart in Connolly, I've only ever gotten it as far as Tara St or Pearse St. And I get it against the flow - there's still a massive bottleneck around the Dun Laoghaire/Deansgrange area relatively often.

Still, it can be slow as far as UCD.

Tara Street would be better. you can get there quicker and you don't use time on the train from Connolly to Tara Street.

OP, your best bet is to try all of the options and see which you prefer.....

    1. LUAS from Heuston Station to Abbey St., walk to Tara St. and get the Dart to DL

    2. 145 bus from Heuston Station to D'Olier St., walk to Tara St. & get the Dart to DL

    3. 145 bus from Heuston Station, get off in Nassau St. and change to the 7 bus to DL
