Making friends outside of school

I have a small group of friends in school but we aren't very close and over the past few months we have drifted apart. I have one very close bestfriend but in a few weeks shes moving to England. I feel kinda lost and I want to just make some new friends but I honestly don't know how. Any friends I have ever had I made in school. How do you make friends outside of school? I really don't know how. I'm sort of shy... My sister wants me to do yoga classes with her but I don't know if there will be people my age. I'm 17 (nearly 18) and a girl. Does anyone have suggestions?

Your sister has the right idea though maybe as you said, yoga mightn't be the place for meeting people of your own age. Don't dismiss it out of hand though. You might not meet people of your age but don't close your mind to the idea of chatting to or even befriending people who are older than you. It would also get you used to chatting to people you don't know.

I think it would help to find out what sorts of clubs operate in your area. There will be plenty of sports clubs of course but you never know what else there might be. Besides the internet, keep an eye on notice boards in supermarkets and local papers. Watch out too for classes or courses which might be aimed at young people.
