Bringing a bike in from America

Just bought a bike from the US and looking not to get stung for duty. Anybody have any tips? I've heard some couriers are more likely than others to be checked? The bike has been bought second hand from a private seller, does this have any bearing?

    Cheers!

No tips on evading duty/VAT allowed. It's due on import, whether new or 2nd hand
