Elevation Corrections on connect

I just clicked "Enable" on elevation corrections tab in connect and my elevation gain went from 488M to 1,243m ???

Can someone explain to me whats happening here: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/157898714

and before the "enable" : http://connect.garmin.com/activity/157898714

I don't understand fully what this elevation gain is about if there's such a huge difference. The second half of that cycle was very hilly, but the edge 500 recorded the gain at 488m so I thought that was the correct reading.

Is it better to enable the corrections each time to get a better reading or what?

The edge 500 works out elevation using the barometric altimeter of the unit. That means if there is any interference of its reading air pressure which is highly likely when you are moving then it is only an approximation. Also is your garmin connect reading in feet?

no its set to read in meters.

I thought from the rtfm that the corrections were for devices without a decent altimeter. The 500 has a decent one so by default corrections are disabled.
There's a little i or? beside the button - click it and be informed :-)

looks like a clear error at 13.89miles in anyway...

Both the OP's links come up with corrections enabled, a quick look at the expanded elevation chart shows 4 obvious errors (or the deepest potholes in Ireland), I'd say the answer is to turn the correction off.
