    I got my D800 yesterday.

I've been pretty busy with work so haven't had a chance to test it properly, but will do over the weekend.

From what I've taken so far, the detail levels at low ISO are simply insane. Hair and fine detail is rendered with breathtaking clarity. High ISOs, well, I haven't really tested this properly but certainly up to 3200 is usable, maybe higher. I'm not really interested past that point anyway.

A quick look at the video output, using default settings, is very impressive.

ooh, congrats on the latest purchase...that camera looks savage.
Do you mind me asking, did you buy online or on the high street?
And, are you selling your older model?;)

It's a bit of a relief to be honest, as I sold my D200 a good few months ago and have been using film in the interim (which was probably good for my technique in many ways).

I got it in Gunn's on Wexford Street. AFAIK they only received one body in the first batch, and I was top of the waiting list, so very lucky to get it. Great shop, fantastic service and very good price; glad to be spending that cash there.

What size are the RAW files?

I assume that it will have Full, Compressed (Lossless) & Compressed (Loss)

I picked mine up this morning. Lossless compressed RAW is 40mb. Very happy so far!

MB please! 40 millibits wouldn't need a lot of storage :)

Good luck with the new cameras guys. The studio test samples on dpreview look very impressive.

I have a grievous and increasing want for one of these. I am on the verge of crumbling and need to hide from my bank, wife and family. I think I need counseling.

    Kbeg you're not helping :)

It needs to be a dual machine for me, I need to shoot 1080p on it as well as stills, but maybe I need to flog some of my older bodies first to finance it.

Here's a thing, should I hold onto the D300 and flog the D700 or vice versa if I'm contemplating the D800? Would it be handier to keep a DX body instead of another FX body?

    Opinions please ...

Have you much dx glass? Might simplify things to only use FF equipment?

Is ISO an issue for a potential backup body, d700 kills the d300 there right?

    Speaking vicariously - do it!

I think this is going to end badly ;)

I have no DX glass at all, pope.

    Hmm, I feel your pain.

The extra reach of the D300 is nice to have access to, but then a crop from a D800 will achieve much the same resolution, so maybe not so much benefit in keeping the crop body. So you should definitely sell the D300.

On the other hand, the sale of the D700 would net a useful few hundred quid more to put to the D800. So you should definitely sell the D700.

    Either way, do it! :D

Flog them all and get an F6 and a brick of film :D

I use mine for video as well and the quality is impressive.
I also have a D300, but can't say I've used it much since the D800. I'd prefer to have two FX bodies, you can always turn on DX crop mode. :)

My last camera purchase was an F4 ;)

Will be shooting it in Kenya/Uganda in Sepember. As well as the 700

C'mon lads, let's see some examples from your new cameras!

I've been considering upgrading to a D800 for ages now, but my brain keeps telling me that I don't need to.

I don't need video, I don't need 36mpx, the IQ seems to be about the same as my D700, and of course I don't have the money, but jaypers I still want one :D

(how much are used D700s going for these days?!)

This might be a Stupid Question but......................

The Nikon D800 can record Video (my friend has one, more money than actual sense)

Can someone PLEASE tell me how do I set it to use Video.
I can take pictures ok but I cannot find how to set it to Video.

    Thanks

(yes I know i know people are shaking their heads saying if he can't find it he shouldn't have it and give it to one of you guys, I agree) (P.S. i only have a Canon 40D)
